Rise & Fall of the Socom Series

Socom took the PS2 by storm. A console videogame that used a headset and allowed you to play 8 vs 8 was unheard of on a console gaming system. The ability to use stealth and tactis to defeat you enemy was a new thing.

For the longest games were pretty much just run and gun. Blast everything in sight, don't worry about tactics or strategy. Then they came out with Socom 2, was in my opinion was the best game of the series.

Then for some reason in Socom 3, they changed course. Went from a game with a lot of cover and stealthness, to a game that was run and gun. The levels on Socom 3 were wide open. They added vehicles to the game. Which really hurt the series way more then it helped it.

With vehicles, you didn't have to worry about stealth at all. Because even if the alarm went off, you always knew it was always a fixed number of extra enemies that would come. And you had way more then enough bullets to kill them all.

Socom Combined Assault was more of the same. Didn't really have to rely on stealth, you could just run and gun your way throughout the whole game. Sure it was 2 levels that were actually challenging, but it was still more of the same.

Next generation came, everybody was waiting for Socom to be released for the PS3. But like all big name series for Sony, you had a long wait.

Socom Confrontation came out last holiday season. To the dismay of many fans, it was an online only game. Bad move to me, because it was the story line that was strong point of the series. Online is highly unpredictable.

However I was eager to give it a fair shot. Just to get on it and find out the game was buggy as hell. Buggy to the point it wasn't even playable online. Took Sony months to finally fix it for it would be decent at least.

The mighty Socom series have fell to the way side. They have very stiff competition now with the Rainbow 6 Vegas series and the Call of Duty Modern Warfare series. Even Microsoft is trying to get in the ring with Halo Wars.

Only time will tell if the Socom series can return to it's former glory.
