VIDEO HIGHLIGHTS: Happel with a contact layup, blocked shot and a step-back "3"
Orlando, FL (AP - Orlando is getting back into the groove of things with its starting lineup back on the court. The Magic blow out yet another opponent, thanks in part to a fantastic start in the first quarter, smacking down Detroit 92-69 in front of a packed house at the Amway Center. Orlando started off the game on fire, making 12 of its first 15 shots over the course of 8:27. But, the Pistons didn't fold right away. Detroit came out in the second quarter firing, going on a 9-0 run that cut the deficit to three points. Orlando then went on a 20-6 run of its own, capped by a Wayne Washington jumper with 2:23 left in the first half. That gave Orlando a 17 point advantage, and the Magic never looked back.
Happel pulling down one of his season-high 21 rebounds
Magic forward Brian Happel was a monster on the boards, cleaning the glass like it was nobody's business. Happel finished with a whopping 21 rebounds, including 18 on the defensive end.
"I just want to keep showing Coach that I'm capable of doing more," said Happel, "If I can do that, and keep working on making my teammates better, then we'll have a lot of good things in store for us ahead."

Happel also poured in 25 points, dished out 5 assists and had 2 blocked shots to round out another excellent performance. Dwight Howard was not a factor on offense, but he contributed on the glass as well, collecting 12 boards. Andray Blatche played well offensively, scoring 18 points on 9-13 shooting from the field. Stephen Jackson remains in a deep slump. He only hit on 6 of 21 shots, and missed all 6 of his attemps from long range.

Detroit struggled all game long shooting. The Pistons shot just 31% in the first half - and finished shooting about the same percentage for the game. Rodney Stuckey and Paul George were among the worst offenders. George was just 5-15 from the field, missing on all 5 of his three-point attempts. Stuckey was even worse, going 3-22 from the field. There were two bright spots: both Michael Beasley and Greg Monroe put up double-doubles and shot a combined 9 of 17 from the floor.
Happel wasted no time jump-starting Orlando's offense with this nice alley-oop on the first play of the game
Detroit fans won't have long to wait for their chance at revenge. The Pistons welcome Orlando to The Palace at Auburn Hills tomorrow night. The Magic are hoping to end 2012 on a winning note. And, they'll likely be on a plane when the clock strikes midnight and we enter into a new year. Orlando has a matchup back at the Amway Center on New Year's Day, against Memphis.

VIDEO HIGHLIGHTS: Happel puts on a show in Dallas, skying for 2 big dunks
Dallas, TX (AP) - Everything is bigger in Texas - including the blowouts. The Magic dominated the Mavericks in just about every way possible en route to a 116-72 victory on the road. It really started from the opening tip. Orlando scored the first 5 points and never looked back from there. It was the three-point shot that really sparked the Magic offense in that first quarter. Orlando connected on 5-11 from long distance, including 4 deep bombs from point guard Gilbert Arenas. "I've just been looking more for my shot," said Arenas in the post game interview, "Coach told me I was being too passive. The assists are nice, but he wants me to find my shots, too."

Arenas finished with 27 points on 10-17 shooting, including 6-10 from behind the three-point arc. Orlando swingman Brian Happel also had a monster game. He poured in 31 points and grabbed a season-high 17 rebounds. Andray Blatche did a tremendous job down around the blocks. Blatche dumped in 24 points and pulled down 12 rebounds. He also shot the ball well, hitting on 12 of his 16 shots. Shooting Guard Stephen Jackson struggled for the second straight game, only getting 4 points on 2-9 shooting. He missed on all 4 3-point attempts. Marcin Gortat was a bright spot off the bench, scoring 8 points and collecting three boards in 16 minutes.
Dunking on Dirk - Happel taking it strong to the bucket
Vince Carter had a stellar outing against his former team, putting up 27 points, 4 rebounds and 3 assists. Unfortunately for the Mavericks, nobody else really stepped up. Dirk Nowitzki practically disappeared, shooting just 5-15 from the field and scoring just 12 points. Dirk wasn't alone in the poor shooting display. Dallas made just 35% of its shots for the game, including just 31% in the second half, when Orlando really pulled away. The Magic shot 60% in the second half, 54% overall for the game.

Rebounding was a big part of the story in this contest. Orlando outrebounded Dallas by a huge margin, 60-33. The Mavericks' leading rebounder had just 6 boards. But, the Magic had Happel and Blatch both pulling down double-digit rebounds, and Dwight Howard just missed with 9 boards.

Orlando now finishes out 2012 with a home and home series against Detroit. The Magic welcome the Pistons to the Amway Center on Saturday night. Then, Orlando hopes to end 2012 with a victory on New Year's Eve at Detroit.

Happel getting back to work and putting on a show with this breakaway reverse dunk
San Antonio, TX (AP) - Orlando forward Brian Happel sent a message early and often to the Spurs and the rest of the NBA: he's baaaack. Happel made his return to the lineup, after missing 9 games because of a twisted ankle. And, he wasted little time showing that he was at full strength. Happel put in a layup within the first minute of the game. He then followed that up with a nice alley-oop layup, where he had to plant and explode off the floor to get to the ball. Happel sent a message that he was healthy, scoring 17 points on 8-11 shooting in that first quarter. Despite a tough second quarter for both Happel and his teammates, Orlando pulled away in the second half to win easily, 97-77 over San Antonio. Afterwards, Happel said he was confident he would only feel better from here, "Man, it's easy to take the game of basketball for granted. I'm so thankful to be back out here on the court. I think I need a couple more games to get my conditioning up to par, but everything else felt top notch."
VIDEO HIGHLIGHTS: Happel is back in the groove of things, hitting shots, dunking and playing defense
Happel was back to his old tricks. He scored 40 points, while grabbing 12 rebounds and dishing out 6 assists. Happel had plenty of help, especially from center Dwight Howard, who scored only 10 points but collected 18 rebounds and swatted 4 shots. Gilbert Arenas continues to play well, scoring 13 points and dishing out 13 assists. He's been shooting the ball better as of late and is averaging nearly 19 points a game since coming back from his injury. Stephen Jackson really struggled all night to find his shot, hitting just 2 of 12 shots from the field.

Four Spurs scored in double-figures, but the high scorer, Manu Ginobili, only had 16 points. Tim Duncan got his double-double, scoring 14 points and grabbing 11 rebounds. Nobody really stood out for San Antonio, as pretty much everyone struggled to make any shots all game long.
Great defense, like this blocked shot by Happel, helped keep the Spurs from getting quality shots. Orlando had 10 blocks for the game.
The bigger story for the Spurs is how they'll play over the next couple of weeks without one of their stars. Manu Ginobili hurt his back late in the fourth quarter. The training staff for San Antonio believes it's a lower back strain, but they say Ginobili is in a good amount of pain, and he could be out for the next week or two.
Pos | Player | Injury Note |
SG | Manu Ginobili | Lower Back Strain; Out 1-2 weeks |
Once again, the Magic used a strong second half to turn a close game into a laugher. Orlando led by just 4 points at halftime. But, supurb defense led to just 10 points on 20% shooting (5-25) in the third quarter by San Antonio. The Spurs only shot 23% overall in the second half and a very poor 34% for the game. Orlando, meantime, shot a respectable 45%. The Magic also outrebounded the Spurs by a 56-34 margin. The one area of concern in this one was the turnovers. Orlando had 12 of them. That is what helped keep it a close game in the first half.
Happel drilling one of his 2 three's - this one in the corner and over Ginobili
The Magic won't have much time to enjoy this victory, however. Orlando now travels to Dallas for a matchup with the Mavericks tonight.

Orlando, FL (AP) - Christmas came a little early for Magic fans. Small Forward Brian Happel was cleared to return to action and should be ready to go for Orlando's next game at San Antonio on Wednesday night. "I'm excited to be back," Happel said after his first practice back since twisting his ankle December 3 against Minnesota, "It's been hard watching from the sidelines. But, my teammates have really stepped up, and that's been fun to watch. We are a better team because of this, we've really rallied around each other."
Happel is hoping to be back to his old tricks as he returns to action against the Spurs
Asked after practice if he was worried about the ankle, he dismissed those concerns right away, "It feels great. I was able to get off the ground and make good, hard cuts during drills, and I really tested it during our scrimmages, I'm definitely ready to go."
Orlando clearly struggled at times without Happel in the lineup, though they did play better than .500 basketball. With Happel, the Magic were 16-2. During his time off the court, Orlando was 5-4. They did well enough to maintain their first place position in both the Southeast Division and the Eastern Conference. However, Happel's abscense was noticeable:
Happel Injury Comparison Stats - 2012-13

With Happel | 16-2 | .889 | 103.9 | 50.6 | 50.2% | 29.6%

Difference | N/A | -.333 | -10.8 | -7.5 | -4.6% | +2.8% |
The biggest difference without Happel in the lineup has been the points Orlando has been scoring. There was nearly an 11 point dropoff while happel was injured. Rebounds per game and field goal shooting were also significantly down. But, that will hopefully all change as Happel steps back on the court Wednesday night. He'll certainly be tested right away. Staring with Wednesday's game at San Antonio, Happel and the Magic will play 5 games in 7 nights, including 3 on the road.
