Some Top App Picks for the Week of February 8, 2013: Two Hardball Gems Stuck
Posted on February 7, 2013 at 11:34 AM.
Pitchers and catchers report next week, which means baseball gaming season is almost here. For iOS apps, the time to jump aboard a great baseball game is now. There are plenty of baseball offerings, and throughout the season we'll try to detail as many of the good ones as we can -- today though, let's focus on two of the more popular hardball offerings.

9 Innings: 2013 Pro Baseball
Free, iOSFeaturing the official MLBPA license, you get real players and fake teams, not unlike SNES games of yesteryear. You are given two options for this game, from semi-auto which lets you control some aspects of fielding and baserunning to auto which handles it all for you. The hitting and pitching mechanics are very simple but work well -- and the most important thing is the game runs incredibly smooth. It's free, it's fun. What else do you need to know? I give this game three Apples out of four.

Baseball Superstars 2013
Free, iOS

This game, in a lot of ways, is the polar opposite of the game prior. Baseball Superstars 2013 is a fast paced arcade baseball experience with over the top graphics and themes. There is a clear anime and Japanese influence on the game's style, and you feel a bit of nostalgia back to games of yesteryear the whole way through. Once you get past all of that you find a game which is quite a treat to play. Baseball Superstars is a role playing game where you create your baseball character and try to earn points as you hit or pitch your way to wins or losses. It's fast paced, addicting as crap, and a good mobile replacement for your Road to the Show fix. Four apples out of four.

Have you played either 2013 Pro Baseball or Baseball Superstars?

I've been playing '9 innings' for a while now (actually played last year's edition as well) and enjoy it quite a bit.

I only play a game once or twice a week now, but I used to play at least a few games a night before bed.

Currently 75W, 16L with my Phillies squad:
SP: Blanton, CJ Wilson, Brandon Beachy, Hamels, Cliff Lee
RP: Ryan Mattheus, Alexi Ogando, Michael Stutes, Mike Leake, Jonathan Broxton

1B: Prince Fielder 2B: Dustin Pedroia 3B: Miguel Cabrera SS: Jimmy Rollins LF : Daniel Nava CF: Andrew McCutchen RF: David Lough C: 2011 Joey Votto

It's not exactly what I would call a sim, or a difficult game (A variety of my players lead the league in almost all statistical categories, including BAVG, Hits, RBI, SB, OBP, SLG, etc), but it is fun to experience some casual baseball for small stretches.
