NBA 2K: Fixing The Flaws With MyCareer

MyCareer mode in NBA 2K14 was a cool, but flawed experience.

I don’t know about you, but having to sit through nearly an hour of cutscenes at the beginning of the mode with no option to skip really ruined the experience for me from the get go. From there, the linear nature of the storytelling was more like holding your hand through a pre-designed NBA-experience moreso than letting you live your own story both on and off the court.

To me, MyCareer represented the best of intentions with some paltry execution.

I do enjoy some aspects of the mode, especially now that I’m through that brutal stretch where I literally sat the controller down after 10 minutes and came onto the OS forums to browse while cutscenes played in the background. Let’s not forget about sitting through the draft waiting for your name to be called when a simple press x to skip option would have sufficed.

Time is money, and most working adults don’t want to buy a sports game to sit through an hour of what basically amounts to pretty subpar dialogue in a story they'd rather be creating themselves right then and there.

So as we look ahead to NBA 2K15, here are three areas MyCareer should focus on to enhance the experience next year:

1)Make the mode less of a singular storyline and more of an unpredictable experience. To me, it makes more sense to not have to come up with a single fleshed out storyline so much as a series of smaller story lines and events which can have a dramatic impact on your career.

I feel the hand holding aspect of MyCareer held you back in many ways and limited your freedom to become a player you wanted to truly be. You don’t need subpar/uninteresting dialogue to get the point across, get rid of that stuff in favor of a more dynamic experience where any number of things can happen. Give players the ability to make choices which impacts the game environment and their likeability.

Most importantly, make some aspects of the mode random. Injuries are one possibility, either to you or to players in front of you. Past editions of 2K's career mode included them, but on a limited basis. What about having random events come up which affect your ability to play well, think MIchael Jordan's flu game here. Another cool aspect would be having a minor injury which you can fight through with lower attributes but higher VC rewards -- but playing through an injury also can result in you being injured and missing time.

Things like that would be far better than a sterilized and linear NBA experience.

2)Don’t make us sit through uneventful stuff. Pressing X to skip through cutscenes would’ve been amazing the first time I played through MyCareer…because I just wanted to build a character and see where things went. I felt trapped the first time through, as if I were being forced to watch Rocky V over and over again with no way out of the theater.

It was a similar feeling when I had to enter every game, wait for the game to load into the arena, only to sit through the game and have random times when I’d see some in-game action. Why not allow the ability to quickly move through games and if we don’t appear, we don’t have to actually go through the process of loading into arenas?

In fact, much of the MyCareer story aspects are best described as forced, boring, or corny. Getting rid of the cutscenes and creating a more seamless experience would make the mode far more playable and addicting, as getting from place to place would be less a chore and more of a seamless transistion. If 2K is adament about selling Virtual Currency, making the aspect of the modes quicker to move through and advance through makes them far more likely to hook consumers and get them to want to pay for some upgrades -- not that I'm condoning that sort of approach or anything.

3)Allow us to define the experience more. It would be nice to be able to do crazy things like talk trash on the court or taunt fans or celebrate — or on the other end be a very low-key player who just goes about his business. As I said in the first point, I think the ideal career mode isn’t a storyline driven experience, but rather the ability to make real choices both on and off the court which impact your virtual universe in real ways, but not in the West Side Story 'we're rivals and that means we're enemies' kind of way.

At the end of the day, sports games have always been at their best when users can create a world of their own making and become sucked into that. How cool would it be to choose our rivals and our words instead of having those be forced onto us?

For instance, after playing at home against the Heat with a rookie from Chicago, I could choose to take to social media to trash talk the Heat or a specific player (aka LeBron James). Depending on how persistent I was, when we went on the road maybe the fans are THAT much angrier towards me and maybe the Heat are a little more amped up to stop me.

I could see this all centering on a popularity/likeability type of scale, where your popularity and likeability both can change and affect the other and your ability to grab endorsements and such. A high popularity and likeability rating, for instance, would net you a major shoe deal, with a very generous VC reward to be had obviously.

The possibilities are endless, as they say.

Final Thoughts

MyCareer mode wasn’t a bad experiment this year. In many ways I believe the foundation established this season will be important towards taking career modes in sports gaming to a better, more dynamic, and story driven future — it’s just my hope that the experiences of the future are more dynamic, and less time consuming than MyCareer mode was this year in NBA 2K14.

Chris, nearly all the things you wish were in the mode, are in the mode. You apparently just haven't played much MyCareer.

Poor article.

I do agree things should be skippable though.

YES, thank you! If I'm on the raptors, I don't want to play what the creators of 2k think is a key game, I may want to play teams with players I'm stoked to play against. For example I'd rather play a clippers game than a magic game, and not have to play every game leading up to it.

I had no idea you could do only key games after season 1 - good news, because I'm just past the all-star break averaging 41min per game and no way to sub out.

C. Interview with interested Teams
2) Rookie Showcase

Sliders are the most important addition that is needed. stop punishing the very people that buy your games. at least add sliders for offline mycareer modes.

gameplay must be customizable like every other sports game on the market before this game mode can be considered a viable and lasting experience.

Three big things that are needed going forward (and that used to be in the mode):

1. Facial customization
2. Custom Rosters
3. Custom Sliders

Let us control Substitutions and Playcalling from any position. My stinkin Hawks never substitute and lose all the time, even if I have amazing stats.

Facial recognition would be nice , and the cutscenes wouldn't be so bad if at least they were different and more random

Sitting through the same GM conversations over and over are a waste. I did like a poster' sides of giving the player freedom on Twitter.

I would like the ability to choose game uniforms for your team.

If the storyline is going to exist give me choices of voice. Nothing against the verbiage used but if I am to be immersed let me believe the player I created will talk as I do.

Said this countless times before but get rid of the stupid forced gameplay scenarios (two missed FTs despite my timing being perfect) and goals that basically reward you for being a total ballhog (score 10 straight, or hit the last shot even if you're double teamed). And I could definitely do without the forced rivalry from the made up Jackson Ellis. I appreciate the dramatic cutscenes, but don't turn it into a cheesy B movie, they should supplement the gameplay, nothing more.

Nice write up. At this point though I've given up on MyCareer every being anything but a mode wasted on flash over substance.

This year was the prefect example. 2K cares about sells not a quality product. 2K in a very predictable fashion have developed the same flawed decision making that currently makes EA sports games unplayable and completely unworthy of a purchase(the ones that haven't been cancelled).

It's a sad thing to watch as a life long sports gaming fan to see this mode deteriorate. It started with combines and summer camp and now we have made up rivals and corny cut scenes.

I only play mycareer on 360 but most of the things I state below should apply to all.

They need to get back to the basics and really work the content of the game from the ground up. I am all for customizations, but if they can’t improve the gameplay, I don’t care how much customization I have. There are a few things I want to see:

1. Better A.I., both defensively and offensively. Every year, we keep hearing 2K says they have a better AI in the latest release but year after year, it still falls short.

On the defensive end, I hate to see my teammates leaving shooters of the other team wide open or simply got lost and don't know whom they should guard. It's especially frustrating to see my teammates leaving shooters open in a close game. Playing on a higher difficulty level should not make my teammates incompetent for basic basketball play. I am totally fine if the CPU beat me fair and square.

The logic of defense needs a lot of work. The PF or C on my team often just stand and watch opponent drive to basket and score. I am not asking them to be the defensive player of the year, but at least put up a fight.

On the offensive end, for the love of god, if my teammate is a shooter and he's wide open, take the shot. I am tired of seeing my teammate asks for the ball, pass it to him, only have him 1) pass me back the ball; 2) pause and doesn't know what to do; 3) drives to the basket with 3 or more defenders waiting for him. It’s too often to see my teammates drive into the lane only have them got blocked or turn it over.

2. Substitution Logic – allow users to have a say when to be subbed in or out. I don’t want to stay in a blowout game, unless I’m close to breaking my personal/team/NBA records, when the rest of the starting 5 are chilling on the bench. Playing 41 MPG is a long time, and it’s especially frustrating to play the whole 2nd half without having a rest.

When my team has an 8 points lead and coach subs me out, fine, but bring me back as soon as the team is having difficulty maintaining the lead. It’s so stupid for my coach to sub me back in with a 20 points deficit. I know it makes a great comeback story but at least give the player an option to let the coach knows to be subbed back in.

If I have 2 fouls in the 1st quarter, or 3 fouls in the first half, please let the coach sub me out or give me the option to tell the coach to sub me out. 2K did it right a few years ago. I don’t know what happened and now it’s all messed up.

3. Take away using VC to increase ratings and overall rating. My player’s attributes should be based on game-to-game performance, training, or scrimmages. For example, my mid-range rating or ability will decrease if I have bad mid-range shootings for, let’s say, 3 games in a row. My rebound rating would increase if I constantly grab more rebounds than my rating suggests. VC should be only used to purchase signature skills or accessories. Also, increase my rookie salary or decrease the price on some of the accessories. I can’t even afford to buy an arm sleeve with my rookie contract.

4. Better rebounding logic.

5. Bring back play calling to all positions. Not all PG can call plays and know what they are doing.

6. Trade Proposal - allow my player to offer trade scenarios to the GM if my overall rating is 85 or above. Currently, we can only suggest to the GM whom to trade for but we can never suggest who on our teams should be traded.

7. Less bugs/glitches.

Sorry for the long post.

I agree with this, that I don't care about the storyline or accessories or sig skills I'd rather have a good basketball game.

Yes I'm in my 5th season still with the pistons not getting paid only one or the most important part of my career is free agency and I sent an email to 2k about 2 weeks ago no response and I see nothing that they are gonna fix it

Fundamentally though, I think we all have an idea of the type of player we want to be and lets be honest - most of us want to be a special player.

For example, if I want to be the beast that Charles Barkley was, I can do that, but why not let me at least skew it that way more freely at the beginning? I don't mind a grind, but the way it is makes you slow and a bad at 90% of things from the outset which is strange.

Also, maybe have currency for BS like clothes and separate currency for ability. Why not make my contract 2 year 300000 contract where that's for clothes and 5000 per year on skills? 2 year 1000 total VC is stupid and irrelevant. Who cares about that? I can use that app and make 150% of that EVERY day! Make it relevant. Like why waste 20,000k on shoes/shirts/shorts/suits when it's such a pain to earn those points that I can put towards skill? I'm not a 'light' player, I've put in over 60 hours, still haven't maxed myplayer and wouldn't dream of spending 2000 points on a silly suit.

Finally, add way more faces and allow a custom league. After all it's my game and I'd rather play with and against ewing, hakeem, wilkins, bird, magic etc... I may be in the minority, but I would love that.
i tried that in 2k11 but i chickened out lol that would have been brutal playing against them legends

The Draft in My Career needs to b added to My GM. For the fourteen top picks they need to have them kome on stage like that then go back to how it is now for the rest of the picks.

I would like to see coaching styles play a bigger part. Have coaches who are sticklers for running the offense and are quicker to penalize you if you don't run the plays or if you take too many mid-range jumpers for instance. And on defense I'd like more options. For instance, when going against the pick and rolls some coaches want you to switch, some want you to hedge if you're the big man or maybe do an aggressive double team. I would love to see that incorporated and if you aren't following the scheme you get penalized.

Also accounting for defensive rotations has always been bad. If the defense gets into the lane then I think my defensive assignment should switch to the open guy closest to the ball instead of necessarily sticking on my man. I would like to see making smart defensive rotations accounted for and to be a positive towards grade level.

Also things such as if we run a fast break offense I should be penalized if the coach wants us leaking out and I'm a PG running inside to get defensive rebounds.

Basically I just want each team you play for to feel completely different and play a factor in if you ever switch teams.

I most definitely agree with this. Those things are a huge part of what makes an NBA season interesting. However, in 2K, the reward for these accomplishments (or attention given, regarding trades) feels wholly underwhelming. I always thought a realtime on-court presentation of an award you win would be pretty cool. Perhaps your player could even accept it in first person.

The presentation could be as simple as this:

With that in mind, I think a trophy case to hold all your honors and awards would make sense. I thought NFL 2K5's Crib was perfect for this. It was there for the people who wanted to use it, but it wasn't forced upon anyone, it didn't really restrict non-Crib gamers from any aspects, and was pretty much just a cool optional bonus:

# 39 Khaos_Kiwi @ 03/31/14 08:44 PM
Something I like the sound of MLB The Show 14 is this:

• There are no longer any restrictions as far as how far up or down you can move when you are promoted or demoted. It is possible to go straight from Double-A to the Majors if the situation is right, although this will be pretty rare.
• Advancement Periods are no longer set to a certain number of games or series. Promotions and Demotions can happen at any time during the regular season. Essentially, your organization is always evaluating you and getting called-up or sent down will come as a surprise, just as it would in real life.

We could have the same thing in MyCareer with the use and re-implementation of the D-League.

Would make much more sense than starting over an all-star just because you've played a set amount of games.

i just hope they can allow you to choose other brands not just Nike or Jordan!!!! why have other brands if you cannot wear them once you pick another brand anyway?
