It looks great but it won't mean much if we don't actually see scenes like this during the course of the live game. Not having these scenes live game has been one of the reasons presentation has been weak, so hopefully we're not being shown closeups that yet again never happen during the actual game.

Also, the crowd blur is perfect as it emulates what you get sometimes during closeups live game. But the two players to the left are too close to be effected by the blur effect that much. That still needs to be tuned but the devs have said it's being tuned so I'm sure they'll figure it out.

Watcher,

The crowd blur you refer to is called depth of field in photography.

This link will explain it. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Depth_of_field

Bottom line, the human eye does not work this way. Anyone who has ever been at the 50 yard line on the field can tell you that you can see very clearly to the grandstands behind the end zones. You get some distortion from haze or if you eyes are not that good.

What is in the game now is fine.

I love DOF but I wish they didnt have it for this shot so we could see the crowd and the other players in the background.

BTW OMT,
those nike or "swoosh" gloves look just like the ones from last year only white. I know its still WIP but update that ish!

Not exactly. Depth of Field (distance, focus etc.) is the cause so to speak, blur is the effect. The link you posted actually refers to that a number of different times, in fact if you look at Part 8.5 it talks about "Background and Foreground blur" and explains the cause (distance and focus) and the resulting effect (Blur).

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Depth_o...ackground_blur

Also, in a video game it is indeed commonly referred to as a blur effect by definition. Unlike the real world where the blurring occurs as a natural consequence of image focusing/distance of objects, this is an effect that in a video game must be reproduced.

That would only be true if you're talking about a Human being watching the game through Human eyes AT the game, but that has nothing to do with this. This is about what you see during a game broadcast on TV.

When you're watching the game on TV you're getting what's being shot through a camera. You do see this effect take place when the camera is taking deep focus on a image, there were several shots like that just during Super Bowl 43, but even before that of course I've seen them every week for pretty much every game I've ever seen. There is no way to avoid it, it's just the way lenses operate. Remember, EA is now trying to replicate a TV Football broadcast, not a you're-at-the-game-watching-it-in-the-stands sorta deal.

And on the following video of the James Harrison's 100yd INT TD, you'll see several instances where the objects in the distance blur and no more noticeable than at about :42 seconds. Objects in the background tend to show motion blur when the foreground object is being closely followed and in quicker motion than the opposing objects and being focused on as this video shows. It of course has to do with distance. The closer you're zoomed more the effect. Observe:

Also take note of how in this other video of the same play starting at :30 seconds, that when the camera is focused in on Anquan Boldin's reaction the foreground image of #56 LaMarr Woodley blurs.

So no, what's in the game currently is not fine at all since it portrays being physically at the game, where the goal is instead to present a TV broadcast. What they're doing going forward with NCAA and Madden 2010 is a point towards correcting it. They probably just need to tune how and when the effect will hit, but other than that they're on the right track and I wouldn't be upset if they left it how they have it in the NCAA 2010 shot.

Part of the reason we need this effect is because the crowd doesn't look great. 60 frames has caused there to be lots of cuts and the crowd is one of the most noticeable. Anything more to take attention away from that is a good idea.

Re: First Pic of NCAA 10

If OMT thought it looked photoshopped at first before he "saw it himself", than it is pretty obvious this isn't very indicative of what the game will look like, and is only the quality we will see in extreme closeup shots, a la Ncaa 2006.

I was actually talking about that shot so we could get more info for what we can expect from the players models, crowd, etc. But I do think it looks great in general.
