Let's Give 'Em a Hand!!!
Posted on September 17, 2009 at 01:52 PM. (0) MLB09 The Show is an awesome baseball game, no doubt. With every player and every ball park well designed and realized, who could complain. With each pitcher having his unique types of pitches and delivery motions, how can I dispute the game's the dog diggity? With stats and personal batting stances and mannerisms obviously manicured, who am I to argue with the game? Hey, I can yell all day like a delirious, obnoxious, and boozed-out pain-in-the-butt from the nose-bleeds, and who's to notice? However, even loving the game, I have something for which MLB10 The Show could surely address...what, you may ask?
The hand.
Let's give the players hands.
The dexterity and miniscule movements of the hand make the game of baseball real. For example, now if your player catches the baseball in his glove, the glove does not bend or flex or close. It's like taking a brandnew glove out of the box. It's stiff. It's non-reactive. It's dead and fake. Watch Escobar spit in his glove and rub the pocket to fashion it to his hand. Notice how the compact, short glove barely fits to that oversized Cuban hand. Watch him flex it. Watch the glove react to a line drive. Watch the glove snap and fold, and notice how the infielder pushes the top of the fingers to mold it into a clamshell shape, rounding the fingers to make a sweep up entrance to vacuum the next grounder. That's baseball! That's infield stuff. That's the way the hand should react to the glove and visa versa.
Who can argue that the batter's fingers do a good job nervously wiggling and reponsitioning as he awaits a fastball? nice touch. But the pitcher's hands are not soft and pliable when his fingers are touching the ball. Sure, MLB has done a resonable job in putting two fingers for a fastball, etc. but these pitchers fingers need to react more-realistically when releasing the baseball to the plate. The flesh has to act like flesh, not like a wax museum character's hands. When the catcher congratulates the closer at the end of the game by placing his arm around the pitcher's back, his hand looks waxy and frozen. Why even have a CLOSEUP of the hand if it actually takes away from the reality of the experience? From a distance, the players move and look real. Then, why move the camera in at all, if the closeup jeopardizes reality. If that's the case, move in closer and let's see the hair on the neck or the pimple...sheeze.
Any graphic representation that takes away from the experience should be disallowed. Why have the pitcher walking to the dugout between innings, just to see his stiff glove slice his upper leg muscle as he walks or the bill of his cap cut his ear as he wipes his forehead? By the way, when he holds that cap in his hand, the hand looks like it was severed from a body at the local morgue. It reminds me of an old Frankenstein movie, where his hands are stiff and unlifelike. No more zombie hands!!!
When the shortstop tosses the ball toward the mound at the end of an inning, the ball lies in his palm in a hand that is frozen in waxy flesh. That ball should be in his limber fingers.
Hands are the romantic connection to the flesh in baseball. There's no other body part that touches the ball or glove or bat of another player except the hand. Without a realistic hand, baseball is unfeeling, distant, and cold.
I know I'm asking alot here. After all, it took God 7 days to create a lifelike hand with his own hands. But it's nice to have it so flexible as to peel an apple or pick a nose. Wow, if only MLB 10 The Show could give our players a hand. I'm afraid if these waxy dead hands continue, some gamers are going to give MLB10 The Show the finger.

I know its tuff as players always switch gear but even a decent base would help Manny blue mit , Halladay Black glove ect .
Old time parks.
Everything else is dead on PERFECT the best ever !
I can see how many older hardcore sim gamers ( numbers ) would enjoy this but at that point why even attempt to play so I broke out my old strat o matic baseball man was Ryan express tough and the dice are never loaded.
My final thoughts not since the last MLB strike has my heart ever felt so disappointed due to this one issue so My final autopsy of 09 is "when keeping it too real went wrong"
Cant wait for 10 !
I'm shocked to hear such a disappointing review.

First off, I believe you can turn off the confidence influence for pitchers in the global setting.

You obviously haven't played mlb 2k the past 3 years...it makes it incredibly easy to love this game.

I think if you change levels and/or fool with the sliders you can find the perfect game for you. It's impossible for a game to be perfect for every gamer out of the box. That being said...i'm not sure how you can say there is no user control so i'd like a follow up to that if you get a chance.

Re: MLB '09: The Show Midseason Report

I love that someone else feels the same way I do about balls in the glove....Its such a minor detail but one that MLB should capture since its such a realistic game. The ball sometimes doesnt realistically disappear into the glove in plays...it sort of sticks to the glove like those velcro foam kits.
I'd like to see a little deformation or snap in the pocket of the glove that simulates the resistance of catching a hard hit ball. Actually MLB 2K7 captured this aspect of the game wonderfully.

Perhaps a little cloud of dirt around the pocket to simulate the impact of the ball hitting the mitt (without overdoing it like MLB's Pigen dust bunny trails down the 1st base line)

And most certainly they should actually make players have collision detection. Plays at the plate or at the bag with sweeping tags or catchers that block a sliding leg into home plate. Right now the game doesnt recognize player model contact with each other

Add Left Handed/Right Handed Batting Ratings

Add even more variety of fielding animations that occur randomly from time to time to keep that fresh "Anything can happen" feel to this game

This game is pretty damn awesome, so all these ideas would just make the game that much better.
