Re: Madden NFL 13 Gameplay Impressions

The gameplay looks promising though I hope the best vs best alignment doesnt cause problems. Personally I a bit worried about the new passing icon system especially if the receivers are still running funky routes.

When will they talk about Franchise Mode? Hope they add scrimmages so I wont have to manually move the ball on practice mode. It would help learn your team. First team vs second team or first o/second d vs second o/first d....I think that would be great.

N i see they mentioned new formations, I wonder if they will add Pat's Shotgun Diamond formation or project the Colts to run Stanford's Hulk formation (or add to San Fran's PB)

I agree and hope but I think it will be such a huge feature I doubt they will allow us to turn it off.

On a consistent basis, NO! SportsCenter highlights have ruined people's perception on how often big & spectacular plays should occur in every sport. I don't mind the top-tier WR's making spectacular catches, but not on a consistent basis. Being a Lions fan, there are some spectacular catches that Megatron hasn't been able to make, and other times the corners just defended him very well and broke the pass up. I guess the biggest factor is the definition of the word "consistent", because EA has been known to take this way over the top and make "consistent" 5-6 times a game instead or 1-2.

See: Pro-tak in Madden 11 before the patch.

By consistent I mean 1 maybe 2 times a game. Non elite receivers should get maybe 1-2 per season.

I mean correct me if I'm wrong, but the icons don't blink or flash, they just don't appear until the receiver is looking. It's not like you can't throw the ball. I am all for options though, so I feel you.

One thing I am curious about, is this linked in any way to awareness (or some other rating), or does every receiver look at the same time during routes? This could be a great way to differentiate elite receivers (and DBs).

Yeah, you can throw the ball at any time, but the catch animations won't trigger is you throw before the icon lights up.

I know that I've heard the devs on both games say that the icons don't light up until the receiver is actually "looking for the ball", but from what I've seen, it looks like the icon lights up when the receiver reaches a certain point in his route -- not when he's looking, but when the timing is right to throw. In one of the NCAA vids and in a Madden one, I saw a receiver's icon light up while his back was still to the QB.

In the NCAA one it looked like the route was going to be either an out route or a curl, but the icon lit up right as his feet where chopping down. He was at the point in his route where the timing would have been perfect, but he definitely wasn't looking

In the Madden one (Steelers vs. Bengals) on the touchdown pass, the slot receiver to the right of the screen runs a deep hook, and his icon lights up as he gets into the void, but before he completes the route and actually turns to face the QB.

Maybe it's going to work differently on different levels, but from what I've seen, this looks like training wheels to me. "Throw the ball when the icon lights up for proper timing." If that's the case, I'm with Jarrodd on this one. I don't like it. I can figure out the timing myself.

Agreed on all counts here as well. It is a glaring indication (as I stated in another post last week) that the emphasis from Tiburon is still on a casual arcade player who needs help. User catching will now be easier because they want the casual, one game per week guy or 10 year old to be able to feel like he has user control. I'll reserve judgement until i try it out, but right now, I'm not overly impressed. The idea of it and the intention is good, but once again, the implementation appears to suck, like most things in Madden. I am really fairly certain that the Madden team does not have the best of programmers. The design is fairly sound (and it should be since you have the biggest blueprint on earth for your designs - the actual NFL) but the implementation is usually pretty poor. We'll have to wait and see what the demo says.
