The polygon article has an interview with one of the developers that said they are too small of a studio (10 man studio) to do online without it being crappy.

I am incredibly excited for this! NHL hasn't been "fun" for a long time and this just looks plain old fun. I don't care if the animations are past generation quality, as long as it plays okay. And the game is not too scripted also.
