I need a little help with freelance offense

I’ve taken a little break from 2k, and am having a little trouble understanding how the freelance offense works. My understanding was that when you turned play calling to manual, your team would run its freelance offense trying to get open, setting screens, creating motion dynamically. However, when I set my call play to manual my team just stands around the court doing nothing. But when I set it to auto my team just continuously runs set plays. What am I doing wrong? How to I get the freelance offense to start working?

Offensive Settings>Freelance 1> Change it to the freelance you want. It should start running. But in game you might need to select it in game. Use the d pad

Why is no one covering the motion freelance every team is defaulted to. Why is it the default freelance?

I was hoping it was a bug and would be patched. I think it's a 'feature' though.
