Dolphins Start 2024 Training Camp

Head coach Mike McDaniel and players reported for Day 1

The Miami Dolphins are back, with their 2024 training camp officially underway.

Third-year head coach Mike McDaniel, his staff, and players reported to Baptist Health Training Complex in Miami Gardens for the official start of Dolphins training camp ahead of the 2024 season. There was a lot of excitement on Day 1, as is customary, but the intensity is sure to ramp up with each passing day.

"You can tell by all the smiles, and fresh sneakers, that it's like the first day of school around here," said the always-quirky McDaniel. "But the hard work is just beginning, and we have a long way to go to get to where we want to get to."

Dolphins Bring Back Cornerback Xavien Howard

The veteran free agent returns on a one-year deal

Xavien Howard (83 OVR) will be a Miami Dolphin in 2024, after all.

The Dolphins announced that they have used part of their $18.1M in available cap to sign Howard, the free agent cornerback who was released back in March after eight seasons with the organization.

Howard, who was short on suitors this offseason, agreed to a one-year deal worth $2.55M.

"Xavien is just excited to be back, especially with training camp having just started," said the 31-year-old Howard in the third-person. "There is no doubt I will be ready for the start of the season."

Report: Linebacker Shaquil Barrett Unhappy With Dolphins

The offseason signing is reportedly displeased with his role

Shaquil Barrett's (81 OVR) honeymoon phase with the Miami Dolphins did not last very long.

Barrett is reportedly unhappy in training camp over how he is being used by the Dolphins. The 31-year-old offseason addition has been taking snaps with the second linebacker unit, leaving him frustrated to the point that he has demonstratively expressed his displeasure on more than one occasion at practice in recent days.

"Everything is fine. There are no issues," said head coach Mike McDaniel. "It is preseason and guys are fighting for spots. Naturally all the players will want to push for more. That is perfectly normal in the National Football League."

Dolphins' Kendall Lamm Ruled Out Of Preseason Opener

The veteran tackle sprained his wrist in practice

The Miami Dolphins will be without one of their veteran offensive linesman in the upcoming preseason opener.

Kendall Lamm (69 OVR) has been ruled out of the home exhibition vs. the Atlanta Falcons after spraining his right wrist in practice. The 32-year-old tackle's injury is not deemed to be severe, but the Dolphins are sitting him as a precaution.

"The official diagnosis is that Kendall is out for one week," said head coach Mike McDaniel. "He will miss the game against the Falcons, which he is bummed about, but he needs a few days to heal."

Preseason Week 1:
Atlanta Falcons 14-33 Miami Dolphins

The Dolphins' defense led the way in the preseason opener

The Miami Dolphins are off to a winning start in the 2024 preseason -- and they have their defense to thank in large part for that.

Led by a strong performance from linebacker Anthony Walker Jr (78 OVR), the Dolphins defeated the Atlanta Falcons 33-14 at home at Hard Rock Stadium in the teams' first exhibition of the year. The Miami starters played in just the opening quarter, but the defense as a whole stood tall by recording five sacks, forcing two turnovers, and making another key stop to prevent a score at the end of the first half.

Walker Jr had a big night with 12 total tackles and two fumble recoveries, the first of which he returned 80 yards for a touchdown in the second quarter.

On offense, backup quarterback Mike White (66 OVR) had a nightmare game. White threw a Pick Six and two other interceptions, all three of which were to Falcons safety Dane Cruikshank (69 OVR), before being replaced by Skylar Thompson (65 OVR). Dolphins kicker Josh Sanders (76 OVR) made all four of his field goals.

"It was awesome for the guys to get back out there after so many weeks of hard work," said Miami head coach Mike McDaniel. "A lot of good stuff was on display for this being the first game of preseason, especially defensively, and now we keep ramping up for the start of the season."
