Salary cap quagmire

I’m playing a franchise as the Bears. It’s the off-season so I try and make a trade for Joe Thuney. Before I make the trade offer the Chiefs are like $27 million over the cap. After I submit the trade proposal, which is just a draft pick from me, they are now a little more than 11 million over the cap, so it’s a relief to their cap hit of about 16 or $17 million. But when I hit submit to propose the trade I get a popup that says "This trade would put the other team over the salary cap if accepted. Try making another offer." Well no duh, they were already over the salary cap. But now they'd be LESS over the cap but the logic of the game can't seem to make sense of that and won't allow me to make the trade. (forgot to point out that I'm about 89 million under the cap, so it's not me the message is referring to that would be over). Does anyone know how to get around this issue with the CPU's flawed logic? Thx

I assume the cpu will eventually get them under the salary cap. Maybe wait to trade until they get there.

You cannot execute a trade in Madden unless both teams are compliant with the salary cap following completion of the trade. If you want to complete your trade for Joe Thuney, you need to get the Chiefs fully under the salary cap, either before the trade or as a result of the trade.

You are unfortunately running into limitations of Madden's extremely outdated player contract mechanics, which do not feature common NFL contract components such as differentiating money guaranteed at signing from guaranteed money triggered later in the contract, void years, and so on. All guaranteed money in a Madden player's contract is captured by the contract's signing bonus which is always owed in full by the team that signs the contract, which is not true to how real-life NFL teams operate.

The effect of this is that Madden player contracts are far more rigid and harder to work with than actual NFL player contracts, and it is far easier for a Madden team to put itself into salary cap hell than it is for real-life NFL teams.

Giggity. You said Quagmire.

But seriously, nothing grinds my gears like trying to navigate and execute a trade in Madden.

Yeah there was no getting around it, I had to wait all the way till week one of the next season when they had to cut (and a few others) him to get under the cap. Which ultimately played out better for me since I didn't have to spend any draft capital to get him. But it was frustrating going all through free agency and the draft not knowing if I needed to spend big money to sign or draft a starting guard or not. I gambled and didn't and luckily it worked out for me. But frustrating process nonetheless.

Take over the Chiefs and restructure contracts until they have enough cap space. That is how I made the real life trades in the offseason here.

and a shorter video of the process here https://youtu.be/SGNyj4-odHk
