Dave Smith Dead at Age 53

RIP

Quote:
Former Astro Smith dies of heart attack

Dave Smith, an Astros reliever from 1980-90 and a member of all three Houston playoff teams in the 1980s, died Wednesday of a heart attack. He was 53.

A two-time All-Star reliever with the Astros in 1986 and 1990, Smith finished his Astros career with 199 saves, second on the club's all-time career list behind Billy Wagner. Over a 13-year career that included two seasons with the Cubs, Smith compiled a 53-53 record over 603 appearances, recording a 2.67 ERA and 216 saves.

Don't know who he was, but that is very young. May he rest in peace.

Dang, RIP. Way too young.

Smith was another of those 80's players with an amazing mullet. Not Roger McDowell quality, but still very good. Dan Gladden caliber.

Smith and Larry Andersen were a pretty damn good combo at the back of the Stros bullpen during the late 80's/early 90's.

Re: Dave Smith Dead at Age 53

Smith was a major Free Agent bust for the Cubs in I believe 1989. HATED him and will never forgive him for his on the field suckage.

But I'm sorry to hear about his passing, RIP.

I'll never forget any of the players that played in that epic '86 NLCS between the Mets and Astros.

I'll also never forget the walk off home run Smith gave up to Lenny Dykstra in that series when Smith was money that year.

RIP
