Being dragged into an animation

Sometimes I feel like I have a total lack of control in this game. The animations are great, but sometimes you are dragged along into an animation, causing sliding and making me feel like the game is playing itself.

For example, I'd be pulling the L-stick back, but my player is pulled forward into a contact animation; or when I shoot near the rim, I can pound the rebound button so much, but I have to wait until the animation plays out; or when you are running with the ball and you do that bunny-hop animation, which drags a much slower defender up with you. Kinda frustrating.

I tried editing quickness, lowering speeds, nothing seems to work.

i know what you mean. it's especially irritating when you're trying to execute a play and then having the play broken due to the dragging animation taking you away from where you want to go.

i agree but the only ones that really bother me are charges and when you accelerate around the defender when hes pressing you and ur guy turns the corner too sharp sometimes and doesnt go where u want to go. but at the same time animations make this game beautiful and we just have to sacrifice a little to have it look more realistic.

whats worse is when your shot gets blocked and the player who got blocked is still in there shooting animation and the cpu gets a free bucket because it doesnt give you time to get back on D

There are sacrifices I'm willing to make; control of my players isn't one of them. I certainly don't find the control issues with this game to be small.

I'd rather have a bit fewer animations of it means I can keep in control of my players. Sometimes I can put down my controller and watch the game play itself. It's problematic, especially after playing Live and feeling more in control of my players.

On another note, I hate the auto-diving animation. If I wanted to dive for the ball, I'd press the button myself when I control the player. The players choose the weirdest times to dive as well.

I think NCAA Basketball 09 and Live 09 are the same engine so while I can't say I've played Live, I've played NCAA and I've never felt so out of control. You get sucked into double teams, you get forced to go backcourt, you get sucked into the animation where the defender is just riding you and you have to make a move to get out of it. Gameplay wise, the only thing that I can really think of that is better in NCAA is the spacing.

Re: Being dragged into an animation

There's no way I'd trade less animations for more control. Too often I think gamers want precise control, which they shouldn't have anyway - there should be some consequence to choosing a particular action. Even in real life you don't have full control. While the animation system isn't perfect and there will always be things that can be improved upon, the system itself is very, very, VERY good. I love the way it's evolved over the years and I think they'll continue to build on it. One of the things I think that made last gen NCAA football games so playable was the momentum system and the years of tweaking they did to hone it. There was a consequence to running full speed, you get less control. You could use a defender's momentum against them. Quickness mattered. I think often with NBA2K9 it's a matter of being willing to learn/play within the intricacies of the system rather than attempting to bend the system itself

Re: Being dragged into an animation

I don't want precise control; I want the system to work as it should. I'm not trying to bend the system, if I press left, the game interprets it as going forward. It makes no sense.

If I pull back on the controlled while standing still, I don't want to be magically pulled forward into a contact animation. I don't want to drag a player who is 30 points lower than me keeping up with my player because of that spinning arm/bunny hop animation. I don't want to be standing at the other end of the key, doing nothing, but being sucked into a foul animation because the CPU wants it, or diving for a ball that's going out of bounds when I don't want/without pressing the button. This kind of stuff happens in this game all the time. If I have to take a couple animations out so it doesn't occur, I'm all for it.

It's just too annoying for me. I can't walk to a spot on the court without doing a couple of crossovers, sliding into a contact animation, and running forward, all of which I don't want. I press left, and I get sucked into a driving animation. I don't think that's asking for precise control, I just want the basic ability to go to the spot I want without being sucked into something.
