NHL Considering Trophy Name Changes

The Hart Memorial Trophy, for the most valuable player, would be named instead after Gordie Howe. The Art Ross, for scoring, would be named after Wayne Gretzky, the most prolific scorer in league history.

The Norris trophy, given to the NHL's top defenceman, would be named after Bobby Orr, who revolutionized the position. The Calder trophy, for rookie of the year, would be named after Pittsburgh great Mario Lemieux.
Another fantastic idea from the NHL brass!

When i read this i thought they were changing the name of the Stanley Cup but yeah i agree i dont like this move. They should just keep the name.

Don't give Bettman any ideas about changing the name of the Stanley Cup...

Oh yeah, sacrifice historic trophy names for more modern names. Great, I guess the NHL will do like the NFL and forget anything happened before 1970.

I guess the Jack Adams would be called the Scotty Bowman now?

Why does anyone care if the trophies continue to be named after owners and what-not?

Those guys contributed little or nothing to the NHL other than collusion.

Stupid. Only change them if they're gonna be "MVP", "Scoring Champion", etc.

This idea is so horrible I wonder if Gary Bettman came up with it. Either Healy or Milbury on Hot Stove (I forgot which one) said it wasn't a bad idea.

I'm not a hardcore purist but I don't want to see the names changed.

Actually most of the trophies were donations and are memorial trophies. So even if you want to throw out the history and tradition argument you still have the fact that it would be a slap in the face of the family that donated said trophies.

I did hear a suggestion this morning that if they really want to do this then they should retire the current trophies and make new trophies with the modernized names.
