MODS, fix my title to say playstation, In my excitement I misspelled it.

At GDC, they didn't show much, but in this video, you're doing minority report type stuff and virtual reality 1:1 tracking. Imagine playing a golf game without a grid and being able to just read the greens with this feature. Watch at the 2:10 mark when he goes into camera mode WOW this is next level stuff.

That looks pretty cool. It's hard to even imagine what type of games and applications we'll be using 10 years from now.

I wonder where we would've been today if companies like Sega and Atari hadn't given up development on some very similar technologies.

Sega had the VR HMD for Genesis that they scrapped. Atari had one for the Jaguar, too.

Atari also had a controller for the 2600 that you operated with your mind (really your head muscles), and they scrapped it. Then there was a console from Atari that used holograms instead of a TV... scrapped it.

There have been lots of cool prototypes that companies just gave up on.

Cost and install base prevented it for the most part.

After seeing stuff at GDC, I thought the Move controller was nothing more than a WiiHD, but after seeing stuff like this changed my outlook. This is so beyond what I thought it would be simply I forgot about the PS eye. Seeing the guy go into camera mode in full 3D, all I can think about was seeing the greens in a game like Tiger Woods and reading the greens without a grid and measuring with just your eyes.

I heard a rumor years back that the reason Sega scrapped the VR project wasn't just because of the glitches, but because they had some preliminary plans for a different Genesis add-on... that eventually became the 32X... they wound up spending more on that blunder than the VR project

Microsoft has been trying to find ways to compete with the Wii's leverage and now Sony is jumping on it, too. Although I'm not a fan of the Wii, I gotta hand it to Nintendo. I never thought Nintendo would ever be in the lead again or be a trendsetter again either, but they did it. I just hope it dies off at some point soon, because the last thing I'd want is for what I consider the "serious" game systems to take that direction entirely and then next generation we get bombarded with it from all of the big three.

There is a video of Socom 4 where they are using this as a gun control. You can actually play through the entire game using it.
