FIFA 10 Manager Mode Progression question please help

Hey I am new to FIFA 10 and I love it so far but was wondering why after 3 games in my franchise ( madden term) that my goalie keeps getting low game ratings (4 or 5) and going down in progression every game .. when I havent lost yet and he leads the league in save percentage. Am I missing something? I am real Madrid in league. It seems like he should be going up .. not down.. what am I doing wrong?

Hmmmm. Maybe he's really tired? How's his fatigue level? try sitting him for a game.

Well how often is he getting challenged with shots? You get a better rating when you make more saves and lose rating when you give up goals. But if you are not getting challenged that much your guy doesn't really get experience as compared to outfield players who are constantly in the action. Also how old is he, has he reached his peak yet, and what does his player growth look like?

Re: FIFA 10 Manager Mode Progression question please help

Well, it's important to distinguish between the player's form and his progression. My understanding is that the player's form is related to his match ratings over the course of the previous several matches. I've heard that an average rating of 6 over the previous five matches will produce a white horizontal (neutral) form arrow, but this was just something I read on a forum so take it with a grain of salt. I find the form arrow system completely bizarre as well and don't quite understand it, and I generally see my players drop to sub-par form routinely even when I'm winning games. I've recently hypothesized that this is because I'm using a very young team who, as a consequence, have generally poor mental ratings and so they may be playing out of position a lot. Since maintaining good positioning is a big part of determining how well you are playing in Be A Pro mode, I imagine it factors in to the calculation of CPU controlled players' match ratings as well.

I've not given this a ton of thought before. It seems like the players who get good ratings are those who are really involved in the game and cover a lot of ground, who play effective defense, complete a lot of passes (with a high percentage), don't cough up the ball, and score goals/assists. That said, how often does your keeper handle the ball? Do you ever pass back to him? Does he ever dribble with it? When he gets it, do you usually play a safe pass to a defender or do you punt it downfield for a 50/50? I ask, because I figure if a high percentage of his touches result in long balls that end in opposition hands, this may negatively impact his match rating. This is just conjecture, though, and I'll have to test this out. The truth is, in the past I haven't given much thought to what I do with the keeper; I just expect him to make the save and then I have him get rid of the ball without giving much thought to how he does it or what the impact of it will be on his rating (and, consequently, his form).

On the subject of progression-- progression is related to several different factors: match performance/ratings is one thing, but you must also consider the player's potential, age, and the amount of playing time as well. If your keeper is an older player, you should expect his physical skills to decline over time; my understanding is that his mental attributes remain intact, however (so while an older goalkeeper may lose some of his reflexes or jumping or speed, he will keep his positioning and likely will remain fairly effective). If it's a younger player, I don't see how he could be dropping in overall attributes (poor form will lower his overall, but it's temporary).
