2009 SEASON RECAP:

Ndamukong Suh will definitely be missed by Huskers.

What a year it was for the Nebraska Cornhuskers. There were many downs, but much more ups. The first test of the season went from being an up to a down game. They held the lead for most of the game, thanks to their defense, but a blown coverage and a touchdown with twenty seconds left sealed the deal for a 16-15 loss to Virginia Tech.

The Huskers did not keep their heads down for long as they got a quality come-back victory over the Missouri Tigers. In this game Ndamukong Suh showed his dominance. He showed his dominance all season against teams like Oklahoma, Texas, and Arizona. In just those games combined Suh had 20 tackles and 6 sacks. The overall defense showed it’s dominance all year by only allowing 10 points game.

Their defense led them all the way to the Big 12 Championship game. A game the Huskers eventually lost on a last second controversial call. The Huskers ended their season with a 33-0 rout over Arizona. After not showing any offense all year, the Huskers offense finally showed a sign of life.

The 2009 season gave Husker fans a lot of expectations for the 2010 season. It looks like Bo Pelini has his Huskers on the right track after taking over after the horrible Callahan era. With 10 starters back on offense and 7 starters back on defense the Huskers are poised to win the Big 12 Championship and hopefully a National Championship.

WHO'S IT GOING TO BE?

One thing everyone wants to know about the Nebraska Cornhuskers is who their starting quarterback will be. The quarterback race is between senior Zac Lee, Sophomore Cody Green, and Freshman Taylor Martinez. Many believe that Zac Lee will be handed the starting job just because he has the most experience as a starter. Lee struggled last year throwing 10 interceptions and just 14 touchdowns. In the middle of the year he was benched in favor of Cody Green. Green also was not very effective, only throwing 2 touchdown passes and 2 interceptions. In the middle of the Oklahoma game coach Pelini decided to re-insert Lee, and Lee was starting quarterback for the rest of the year. Green also has good speed for a quarterback, but not near the speed of Taylor Martinez. Martinez might not only be the fastest quarterback, but maybe the fastest player on the team. As coach Pelini puts it “he just has a different gear”. Martinez could had another dimension to Shawn Watson’s offense.

One thing is for sure though, coach Pelini is not planning on naming a starter anytime soon. Pelini says “The starting quarterback will probably not be revealed until right before the first game.” Most fans are hoping for Martinez’s name to be called upon after delivering a dazzling show in the spring game. Even though quarterbacks are protected in the spring game, Martinez showed the speed and agility to run right past defenders. Who ever it is, lets just hope the offense is not a mirror of the 2009 season.

OFFENSIVE OUTLOOK

Last year Shawn Watson took a lot of heat from Husker fans, and it might have been well deserved. This year though the offense is looking to become more dynamic than years past. Without naming a starting quarterback until the first game, it will be hard to tell what kind of offense the Huskers will run. Zac Lee has the best arm, but is the slowest of the three. Cody Green has a good arm and can run a little bit. Taylor Martinez might be the worst passer, but is definitely the best runner out of the three. One thing is for sure though, if Martinez is named starter then you can bet that there will be many read options incorporated into the offense.

The Huskers backfield is loaded with talent with the likes of Senior Roy Helu Jr. and sophomore Rex Burkhead. Even powerful back Tray Robinson will get some carries. The two headed monster of Helu and Burkhead will definitely be the vocal point of this years offense. Helu is a big, powerful, and surprisingly fast back, while Burkhead is a “fight for every yard type of back”. Burkhead also will occasionally line up at receiver a couple times a game because of his excellent catching ability and to have another running weapon on the field. He really came on late last year with a 100-yard game against Colorado and a 95-yard game against Arizona. When in the I-formation the man leading the way will be fullback Tyler Legate. Legate is a 5-10 235 lbs truck. He is looking to fall in line with all of the other great Nebraska Cornhusker fullbacks.

The receiving corps has it’s main man back in Niles Paul. Every time Paul has the ball in his hands we could see the scoreboard light up. He has very good speed and strength for a receiver. Paul will also handle the punt and kick return duties for the Huskers. Many people are also expecting a lot out of Brandon Kinnie. Kinnie is a big target standing at 6-3 220 lbs. He is showing to be a lot more consistent during the spring than he was during last season. The third receiver will be former tight end Mike McNeill. McNeill’s hands and speed will make the transition from tight end to receiver a bit smoother. Other notable receivers include 6-6 senior Will Henry, sophomore Khiry Cooper, and freshman Quincy Enuwa. At the tight end position there was a big loss during spring practices. Dreu Young will be out for the season with a back injury. Young is the same type a player has Mike McNeill, just a little bigger. Looking to fill his place is 6-6 Ben Cotton and converted fullback Kyler Reed. Cotton is a good blocker and has average hands.

Maybe the most important, but least recognized group of players on a football team. The offensive lineman for the Nebraska are looking good if they can stay healthy. At the left tackle position there is Jeremiah Sirles, left guard is Keith Williams, center Mike Caputo, right guard Ricky Henry, and right tackle D.J. Jones. This experienced group is comprised of three seniors, one junior, and one freshman.

DEFENSIVE OUTLOOK

The Blackshirts return 7 starters from a defense that was ranked number one in scoring defense last year. The biggest and most obvious loss is the loss of Ndamukung Suh at defensive tackle. Looking to replicate Suh’s presence are junior Jared Crick and sophomore Baker Steinkuhler. Crick was Suh’s partner in crime last year registering 70 tackles and 9 sacks. Steinkuhler, son of former Husker Dean Steinkuhler, has shown a lot of potential. Manning the end positions are senior Pierre Allen and Sophomore Cameron Meredith. Allen posted 49 tackles and 5 sacks last year. Like Steinkuhler, Meredith got a lot of spot playing time last year. This defensive line is going to have to continue to get pressure on the quarterback for this to be one of the top defenses in the nation.

There are some questions at the linebacker position. With Will “straight outta” Compton and Sean fisher being injured in the spring, Lavonte David and Eric Martin are going to get to show what they can do. Compton might be ready to go by the time the Huskers start Big 12 play, while Fisher’s broken leg will force him to miss the whole season. Junior transfer Lavonte David might be small at 6-1 210 lbs, but he is very fast and shows great linebacking instincts according to Bo Pelini. Last year Eric Martin was one of the best special teams players in the nation. This year he will be shouldering quite a bigger load as the starting middle linebacker. He like David has exceptional athletic ability and Martin shows good tackling technique. Other linebackers that might see playing time include sophomore Alonzo Whaley and junior Mathew May.

Arguably the biggest strength of the Husker defense is the defensive backs. The starting defensive backs include 4 seniors and 1 junior. Future NFL first rounder Prince Amukamara leads the way. Last year he totaled 60 tackles, 5 interceptions, and even 2 sacks. The man on the other side of the defense is Alfonzo Dennard. Defensive coach Carl Pelini says that Dennard is all as good as Prince, but just does not get the hype. Dennard is small at 5-10 195 lbs, but he can definitely cover the best receivers in the nation. Manning the two safety positions will be Dejon Gomes and Rickey Thenarse. Gomes is a very versatile type of player that can play safety, corner, and sometimes line up as a linebacker. Thenarse has been plagued by injuries throughout his time in Lincoln. If he can stay healthy, Thenarse provides a heavy hitter for the Huskers at the safety position. The huskers main formation they use is something called the Peso. The Peso back is a hybrid between a corner, safety, and linebacker. Eric Hagg is the perfect player for this job because he will come up and hit you and he still can cover a man one-on-one. Gomes might also be put at the Peso position.
