Pete Rose was a better hitter than Ted Williams...

...because he had more hits.

Nevermind the nearly five full years that Williams missed due to military service.

Nevermind Rose's .303 lifetime average compared to Williams' .344 clip.

Who agrees that Pete Rose was a better hitter than Teddy Ballgame?

I work with a guy who is about 55, and we had this argument. He is a big Rose fan and claims that Rose was better. He bases it off the hit argument, but he ignores all the other numbers that Williams destroyed Pete in.

Rose was great, but come on.

We had a thread last year about Rose...I stated in there he is one of the most overrated players of all time. Yes, he was a great player and I'm not saying he shouldn't be a HOF'r based on his on field play, but folks try and make him out to be the greatest hitter of all time because of his hit total. He couldn't carry Ted Williams jock strap...

That's why I never talk about sports with anyone at work. Their sports knowledge is sorely lacking.

As for your question, Williams > Rose.

What's worse is that there was another guy there agreeing with him. They basically told me that I was off of my rocker by calling Williams better. I laid it out in detail but they were just oblivious. Everyone has their opinions and I respect that, but when you start ignoring facts, you lose all credibility with me.

No one would ever deny that Rose was a very good hitter, but to say he was the best ever is just silly. I can see the argument with Ruth against Williams, or Aaron against Williams, etc... but Rose?

He told me to "extrapolate Williams' five best years (due to the lost military time) and he still wouldn't come close to catching Rose in hits."

Hits.

Everything else be damned, I guess.

It'd be like me saying Ken Griffey, Jr. was the best hitter ever.

He's my favorite player ever, but there were better. Homerism really ruins a lot of people's credibility.

You're both wrong. It's obviously that Barry Bonds is the greatest hitter ever because he hit more home runs.

And SportsCenter only shows home runs, so they must be more important than anything else in baseball.

It would depend on what stats you feel are more important. Rose is higher for me in some regards due to his higher hit totals and total bases. I personally think the best hitter baseball had was Hank Aaron (just talking about pure hitting talent). Still, this is a very subjective subject.

guy at work was talking all about football but had no idea who was in which conference, saying he thought two AFC teams were going to be in the SuperBowl...

happens all the time...and it is just weird.
