PS3 tells you when you connect to the wireless network.

Re: Hown do u know when...

It's not always about signal strength. Even if it's 100%, you can still lag if your bandwidth is being used elsewhere. For example, if you have a computer / laptop and your PS3 / 360 connected to the same network, and you're downloading files or torrents or whatever, it's going to cause you to lag while playing online. Reason being is because it's using up your bandwidth. If I were you, I would turn off any computers that are on and connected to the network, so your PS3 / 360 can control the bandwidth.

well that happens to a game i play maybe twice every 50 games when the game just stutters all the way thru... iknow my signal is 100% cuz the router and modem and p3 are all next to each other ... but the bandwidth thing makes sense ... i learned sumthin today... thanks for the input it was just a random question

If you go into the lobby, look at the icon to the right of your name and see how many bars you have. This is really the only way of knowing whether it's your connection or your opponents; however, I've still had a few laggy games when we both had "full strength" signals. I think that green, 3-bar status is a little lenient.
