Is NBA 2K12 worth getting at this point?

Keep hearing mixed reviews about this game, which I held off from buying this year due to the poor reviews it initially got and Battlefield 3. My neighborhood friend, who is an avid gamer and big basketball fan (you might have heard of him. Chris Smoove anyone?), told me the patch that just dropped doesn't make the game much better if at all.

My question to guys with the game now, is NBA2K12 worth getting at this point? Is it even fun to play for a casual basketball guy like myself, or has all the fun been ruined with weird and glitchy stuff?

I want to get it to play friends online and bro in person (not really an Association guy) and enjoy it like I did 2K11, but don't want to dish out $40 if it is as bad as some, like Chris, say.

Since you're a casual basketball guy I'd recommend you get it. I'm in the same boat really. I like watching some of the games and enjoy playing 2k12 with friends mostly, either local or online. It's not a sim game by any means and there are still issues with the pass not always going where you were telling it to go, but it's greatly improved from last years version in my opinion. The defense is better for sure, still a lot of standing around on offense from the AI. If your brother enjoys playing it as well maybe you too can split the cost? $20 hit from both of you rather than a $40 hit on just you. I don't know if that's feasible but it is an idea.

Re: Is NBA 2K12 worth getting at this point?

Thanks for the feedback. I'm not THAT into basketball like I am soccer (where I know all the nuances), but I still like my video games to be somewhat sim-like. I though NBA2K11 did a real good job. Is 2K12 a downgrade or upgrade from it for casual and hardcore b-ball fans?

Thanks again, though. Anyone else want to share their thoughts?

Re: Is NBA 2K12 worth getting at this point?

sure. but first of all, is smoove rally your neighbor?
and to answer your question, i was on the fence, and got it last night. Its a fun game. I'd say, if you enjoyed 2k11, you will enjoy 2k12. And 40 bucks isnt 65 like some people paid 2 months ago. There are some issues, but not game-breaking. I was getting bored of mw3, so i got this just as a little break from it, so if you are getting a little bored with bf3, then get this to take a little break from it as well.

Re: Is NBA 2K12 worth getting at this point?

If I bought the game for $40 versus the $60 I paid for it, I would probably be more satisfied with it. My dissatisfaction with the game is not because I think it's horrible. It's because the game didn't meet my personal expectations (peep my sig).

When I had 2K11, I kept thinking to myself that if 2K did this, that, and the third for 2K12, I would probably never buy another NBA 2K this console generation because there would be no way they could improve from that. Well, they tried to do this, that, and the third, but the overall execution lacked polished. Many of us were hoping that the patch would give the game that polish it was lacking at launch, and while the patch did make some improvements, they were minimal at best and still left a lot of areas needing to be addressed.

With you being a casual basketball fan, I think you would enjoy it. The way you feel about basketball is the way I feel about soccer. If I buy a soccer game, I want it to be realistic, but I'm not going to know every nuance of the game to judge its realism thoroughly. With basketball games, however, I go through them with a fine-tooth comb.

Re: Is NBA 2K12 worth getting at this point?

First off I have not owned a basketball game since the last CollegeHoops. I did buy 2k12 at release...sold it back about 2 weeks later cause of control issues. Passing, rebounding or moving around with the ball just didn't 'feel right'...I can't explain that any better.

I have been waiting on the "BIG" patch tho and once it dropped I've read almost every word on the impressions threads...based on what they are saying, I finally decided to buy a preowned 2k11 version ($17)mainly on the glowing comments that are STILL being posted about it...and they are all true!

2k11 FEELS right and plays very smooth...I will be happy with that one for a while I think. I know this didn't answer your question but...sorry.

Re: Is NBA 2K12 worth getting at this point?

No offense to the OP but there have been numerous threads on this - probably with the exact same title - it's gotten beyond tiring to see people keep reguritating the same thoughts when a little effort would get you most of the information you need. That is if you're truly sincere about finding that information in the first place. That said:

I purchased it at $60 and feel it's been more than worth every penny. I've had my frustrations with the game, no doubt. Not to make a direct comparison, but I'd say the situation is a little like that of Skyrim - a highly ambitious game that most people enjoy, yet I've read many people on boards slamming because of the bugs associated with it. 2K12 is the most ambitious sports title effort this year. I haven't played every sports title but I don't see one that comes close. In a year where 2K could've easily mailed it in with no competition, the threat of an NBA lockout, etc., they pushed and pushed hard to improve the game imo. And like the people that will discount Skyrim as a total package because of the issues they see, the same occurs with 2K12. I think they've gotten it from all sides, some people saying they only wanted 2K11.5 or people saying they wanted something completely new.

2K definitely made mistakes; I think a lot of the new content requires people to do things that they aren't used to doing (making an effort to learn the game) and 2K needed to provide more in terms of in-game tutorials or perhaps leaving certain options on/off to get people to learn the new gameplay dynamics (new playcalling system, better training mode, etc.). Some things flat-out don't work like they should. But if the game is looked at as a whole, you can see where it stands above other efforts.

I could look at NFL2K5 and say certain things like QB Spy flat out didn't work. But when people were forced to learn it, understand it, over time it became appreciated for the depth that was packed into the game. The things 2K5 did well far outweighed what it didn't. However, if you were to ask the 10 football gamers what they felt regarding Madden 05/NFL2K5 you would've gotten 10 different answers. I feel the same way about 2K12: it's not unlike NBA2K11 where it could stand on it's own for years. I'd say even longer in part because of the untouchable job they did with presentation in the game, the Legend content, the level of customization offered, etc. Unfortunately you'll have a lot of people that can't see the forest through the trees, so a lot of what's great about the game will get missed or will go unappreciated.
