HB Direct snap

Just a general football question I have been wondering...Would it be legal in football for the 2nd string qb to be lined up as the HB and do a HB direct snap to that QB and have him pass the ball, instead of snapping it to the real QB. Mods feel free to move this thread if you'd like

Re: HB Direct snap

Yes, it's perfectly legal.

It's the same as a double pass from a WR.

As long as you are behind the line of scrimmage it is a legal play.

FYI - I am a coach

Awesome...why do coaches not try this? You could have QB1 HB 1 and QB 2 all lined up beside each other...Looks like it would be crazy to have to defend? No?

Why would they try this? There's no point to it. All it really does is take the halfback slot out of the game.

What difference is it going to make for pass defense? It's not like the whole defense is going to start playing the run if the 2nd String QB gets the ball. Besides, don't you want your 1st String QB throwing the ball?

Re: HB Direct snap

Unless your 2nd string QB is Tim Tebow, Collin Klein from KSU, Robinson from Michigan or RG3, there's no reason to do this. The defense has to be scared of the legs of the 2nd string QB or they'll just play the pass no matter what. Then again, if your 2nd string QB has legs as a weapon, why wouldn't you just throw him out there with 2 RBs and put the #1 QB on the bench for that play?

Re: HB Direct snap

Sometimes you'll see a halfback direct snap and then the HB runs the ball, but there's really no point in having two QBs in the backfield.
