Scouting For 1st Year Draft Tips?

How are you guys going about scouting? I just had my 1st year player draft in my franchise and I didn't have too much success. I drafted some guys with A potential but their overalls are so low I felt like I didn't get enough out of it.

In my scouting I usually assign each scout to their area to find guys, then when they find a guy with 97 or higher potential I assign one of those players to the individual scouts until they fully scout them. Should I not get each player fully scouted because I don't think I had enough players that were on my radar by draft time? Just curious as to how everyone else goes about this.

ETA and there age is a big thing. Just cause they have 97 potential doesnt mean they a great spec cause if they have ETA of 5+ yrs away and are 23 already means they will be in minors till almost 27,28. Need to find guys that ETA are close and have high potential. Im trying to see what is best way to scout. I did what you did and feel that im missing alot of players so now im going to try and have 2 scouts "discover guys" while 2 scouts do the reports and see how that runs

Re: Scouting For 1st Year Draft Tips?

I am curious what others are doing as well, as this is the first year with this type of scouting. I had all four scouts discovering prospects for about the first two weeks of the season, discovering a significant amount of individuals. From then on, I have gone through who they discovered and assigned scouts to individuals that I might be interested in all the way up to the draft. I'm about 2 weeks away from the draft so I'm not sure how it will pan out. I feel like I have a good number of prospects fully scouted (including the top tier prospects who are already fully scouted). Any suggestions or things that you guys have found that work would be greatly appreciated. Loving the game so far.

I haven't done the best scouting so far, but I have been able to draft a couple players who have developed into 90+ overall in 3 years. I usually draft a player with the closest ETA and the highest potential. I only draft players that are fully scouted, most often the top guys that are already given, unless I really want to risk reaching for a player. Also drafting younger players like an 18 year old is better than anyone over 21. Even if they have low overalls to start they will develop to be better than the older players. I've also found that progressions happen fairly fast. My players average increase was +25 overall during their first 2 years in my organization. The better players develop faster than that sometimes. I was doing auto training too, so they weren't growing because I was picking what areas to increase.

When is the draft in the game? I think that would help with the above. This was you could have all 4 discover for like 4-6 weeks then just scout everyone that was found up until the draft.

Also, how long does it take to fully scout a guy in the game?

A couple players at 90 overall in 3 years! That seems a little too fast.

3-4 days maybe?

I just had all my scouts end up scouting 1 position, then sort those guys by potential, and have each scout end up scouting all the 80+ potential players to see which one is really an 80+(or A) potential guy. I got through several positions doing that. Just hate how you can't scout between June(after draft) and March. Only April,May can you really scout.

Using that method I said, I managed to get every round of A and B potential guys. Just get best available player regardless of position. Cause in the end, if you don't need a certain pitcher in the future, you can always just trade that high potential prospect(or another guy on your team) for a diff position.

I disagree completely. Just look at the game itself. How many players are rated 90 or higher after 3 seasons?
Evan Longoria?
Joe Mauer?
Yu Darvish?
Steven Strasburg?
Mike Trout?
I can go on and on............

In fact I believe the old way of it taking forever for a player to develop was very very unrealistic.

(EDIT: I realize Longoria and Mauer have been around for more than 3 years now, but at the time they were rated very high in the game from almost the very beginning)
