Could NBA 2K Exist as a F2P Franchise?

The idea hit me when I saw previews for the PS4's Blacklight: Retribution and Warframe titles. They look like top shelf games, yet they're free to play. The producer of Blacklight clearly took a shot at annualized FPS games, stating that consumers would have to purchase a new game for new maps, gameplay features, and weapons, while his team can patch it into the game they released on day one.

I only play 2 game modes; online (with my buddies) and practice. This has been the trend for me since NBA 2K1 on the Dreamcast via SegaNet.

Why can't 2K indefinitely patch in roster updates, playbook changes, and other aesthetic features? Or could we pay for the game modes that we want? I believe Sony sells Killzone's multiplayer component independently on the marketplace.

I'm not saying that Take Two, or 2K sports should hop on the suggestion. I'm not entirely familiar with F2P games or how the business model works for something like this. Couldn't this work for NBA 2K? I think it would be a huge win for gamers imo. Just having more choices never hurts.

F2P could turn into pay-to-win with VC, extrapolated onto other modes beyond my player and my team, like association or even quick games.

Besides, they're charging us for VC on top of the price of a full game so not sure why they'd forgo a guaranteed revenue stream along with income from VC.

It would be nice to even have some sort of subscription to get accurate, up to the minute roster, art, and stat updates. We shouldn't have to pay for that but I wouldn't mind doing so personally.

I agree. EA's Ultimate Team and 2K's rendition of it really blurs the line between free to play and pay to win.

I do like the idea of gamers being allowed to have the initial roster for free whilst legend teams and the most up-to-date roster would require some sort of payment. Or maybe a yearly subscription could unlock everything similar to season DLC passes for other retail games such as Borderlands 2.

I know almost no one would be happy with this since we expect our sports games to be 60 bucks and last us season long but I wouldn't mind paying more, maybe twice as much, for the game, all modes, and a "league pass" given how much I play the game.

I don't know. If NBA 2K popped up this fall for "free", with all the game modes and players available, I don't see too many people being upset about that.

I think there would be a residual income with a F2P model could be better than a game that sells directly for a fixed price.

There's aesthetics in the game 2k could charge for:

Throwbacks
Shoes
Legendary teams
Overseas teams
MyPlayer accessories

Maybe 2k should attempt to expand the MyPlayer feature into something that's more so of a MMO in design. Sure the players' individual careers could be separate from one another, but just having a virtual hub where players can hang out and play pickup would be pretty amazing.

The thing is, 2K basically became this already.

Ever since 2K10 added My Player and Crew I was hooked on them modes. But now you get 2K13 and they FINALLY made the online stable because I haven't seen a single hacker yet, and guess what?....People payed for their VC to upgrade their players.

I honestly think this is the worst thing 2K implemented into the game, but that's just me.

You're looking at one aspect of the game. MyTeam has a lot of potential, but it's flawed with its current state. However I'm suggesting the entire game itself should be free versus paying retail and then more in this pay to win environment.
