Is NHL 14 worth it?

I have done some research to find out if NHL 14 is worth a purchase or not. I have found conflicting answers. I think the enforcer engine looks pretty cool but is the gameplay good? Is Be a GM good? I also heard the progression/potential system is broken? Is this true?

What NHL game have you played last? I think that will factor into it.

If you're a BaGM guy, then go with 14 (that is, if you're trying to decide with another NHL title), it is the most advanced.

Third person fighting is definitely better, but the "enforcer engine" needs better implementation. In reality, it's the best thus far but, I was a little disappointed in how it comes into play. Still, it's not a hindrance.

The progression system isn't broken, it's whether you like/agree with the design of it. It's been tweaked through a patch and more people are accepting of it but, in all honesty, I thinks it's the best they can do based on the player rating system already in place. I mean, I like things very realistic, and I think they've tried here but, be careful of the "real life" logic you use to interpret the outcome.

Gameplay? This is the tricky one. I think most people are upset because they expected more in '14. They wanted big changes and that didn't happen. If you're going to be playing BaGM, I would say you're going to wind up on superstar level at some point (if you're not there already), due to the lack of defense on the cpu's part below superstar. However, you're going to need a great deal of patience playing defense on this level. I've wound up playing more like the cpu: going with the play and waiting to make a move.

I have a dynasty blog for my BaGM with highlight videos. You can check it out here:

Maybe you can get an idea of the game play against the cpu.

One more thing I should mention: penalties.

There are penalties in this game but, there's a trick to it. Someone on this board made a discovery (I can't think of his name, but you can find the thread).

You have to leave the settings on default and make the slider changes before the start of each game.

I.E. I start a BaGM, I choose superstar, hardcore simulation, 10 minute periods, etc and leave it. Don't change anything that would change "hardcore simulation" to "custom". Now before you play each game, as you enter the "sides selection", "jersey selection" screens, etc., when you come to the gameplay options screen, make your changes there. When you're done with the game, the settings will not reflect your changes.

For some reason, this seems to work.

It's not a whole lot different from NHL 13 to tell you the truth, the only really big changes would be the Be a Pro (Live the Life) and the Enfocer/new fighting engine, though those aren't all that big of a deal to me (though I like the new third person fighting), but I'm okay without it.

don't pick it up, trade it in, EA Sports has already begun to silence me from ever posting at EA Sports Forums, for posting the trueth, they do not want to hear the trueth, they are blind to even there own greed, Goalie Mode in NHL 14 is broken it didn't work none of slider values work at all, only mode that's useful in NHL 14 is Be A GM but that is even problem cause after the first season entire 3-4 lines filled with defenders.

if your gonna play goalie in NHL 14, I'd suggest play goalie in NHL 13 it is more stable, EA Sports Already declared there will be no farthore patches, except tuner updates (even that's scares) but mainly roster updates and dynamic updates.

I have had more fun playing NHL 14 than any of the previous games. I am playing farther into GM modes than ever before, playing instead of simming where previous years I simmed a lot.

Re: Is NHL 14 worth it?

NHL 14 is probably one of the best hockey video games out there. Let me tell you exactly why.

The new enforcer engine is awesome. Third-person fights and you can fight after the whistle. However, I feel like it could use a better AI. Other than that, it's awesome.

Live The Life is only ok, but the Be A GM is over beyond my expectations. Wow, way better than NHL 13. They finally fixed player progression. The only flaw is that young players get red potentials too fast. But it's the best part of the game.

Overall NHL 14 is a must buy.
