Phantom's NHL14 "REAL-SIM" NHL Rosters (& Sliders)

Apologies for not mentioning in the title, but these will be created for PS3 and hopefully converted to Xbox so both may be hosted.

Hi everyone, you may know me from my custom realism slider set from the PS3 NHL board. If not, please check that thread out (in signature) to get a rough idea as to who I am and what I know. Anyway, I've been considering the idea of creating a custom roster for quite some time to address issues that slider modifications simply cannot - namely penalty calls and lack of statistical separation between players (and in-game). I realize there are other rosters out there, but I feel that a slider and roster combination that are designed to work together may be able to accomplish what each alone cannot. The rosters should be accurate enough to reflect real-life skills, but manipulated with the skill to best hone the shortcomings and issues of the gameplay, while the sliders should add balance and smooth the rough edges. I'm comfortable enough with my own personal knowledge of players scouting reports and tendencies to customize these rosters not only accurately, but to best work with my slider set and together provide the ultimate realistic NHL 14 experience.

I'm a GM/Franchise mode gamer for years who loves 2 things: REALISTIC games & a DIFFICULT challenge. I've tweaked my slider set as best possible to provide the style of game I was looking for, as mentioned, difficult and simulation oriented. I also want to establish more personality to players, if at all possible. To make Phil Kessel play like Phil Kessel. EA hasn't added the personal touches of an NBA2k14 title (signature animations), but with enough gap between average player ratings and emphasis on particular skills for particular players, I think it's possible to a degree. Imagine most players shot ratings falling in the mid to low 70s, while Kessel has a 98 powered wrister. You're sure going to notice! The key is using the sliders to keep things balanced at the same time, something I feel a roster edit alone may not be able to fully accomplish.

Now I have not looked at any other roster files on this or any other site, so forgive me if any ideas or rehashed or have been previously mentioned.

Looking at the ratings of a player, each can have a value of anywhere between 36 and 99. The basic scheme for the roster is as follows:

Overall

Practice Squad Scrub
(36 - 51)
Junior Level Prospect
AHL Level Prospect
(52 - 67)
Fringe NHL Ready Player
NHL Ready Prospect
(68 - 83)
Everyday NHL Player
NHL Star
(84 - 99)
Elite World Talent

This scheme will be applied to all players, all teams and all individual ratings. It allows the players to be evenly tiered into 4 groups, giving you an idea as to their overall ability level. Ratings above 90 will be reserved for NHL superstars only. There are some ratings which will work slightly out of range of this grouping, or purposely to the extremes for purpose of gameplay modification. This includes ratings like puck control and discipline. You may notice patterns with numerous players, and this isn't laziness, it's specific values to produce specific results.

By grouping players strictly within these tiers, there should be excellent separation among talent levels if the ratings are done accurately. Changes to the discipline and def-awareness ratings will influence penalty calls, while players speed and overall shooting will be reduced and varied quite a bit to add separation and realism.

I'll complete a full write-up just prior to release, but I'm working on a DEMO version right now. I plan to complete a few teams totally and release it so people can get a feel of the rosters and most importantly, the rosters and sliders working together. Expect this to be done within a week and I'll keep things updated for anyone who is interested. The plan is only to do the NHL at first, but since I'm a GM player, expect full AHL and prospects to follow shortly, as well as international player updates (big KHL fan here).

Go Canada!
