NBA 2K11 1979-80 Season Roster (Xbox 360)

A few years late but here is my first classic 2K11 NBA roster for the 1979-80 season. I still have a lot of great memories of this particular year, especially staying up late Friday nights to watch the tape delayed games on CBS, which started at 11:30PM. I was 13 years old.

Spent what seems like forever on this file, which was started from portlandblazers terrific 84-85 file. All PB's Caps used have been updated (or is it back dated?) to reflect this season. That includes not only a lot of ratings/accessories/tendencies/hotspots/sigs work, but even made small changes to their look. (Kareem now has hair & the beard, Sikma's straight hair, guys like Roundfield & Tree Rollins went from balding to the big fro, Dan Issel more hair ect.) Pretty much tried to be as detailed as I could with this and i'm definitely happy with how it's turned out.

http://www.basketball-reference.com/.../NBA_1980.html

This site was great for doing ratings/tendencies ect., but i'm not so sure when their depth charts were from... maybe season openers? I used it for any depth chart stuff I wasn't sure about, but there are definitely some differences. Also Magic was listed as SG with Nixon at the point and even though Nixon did call plays and play point at times, Magic clearly ran the show so I moved Nixon to SG/PG. Same with Bird and Cornbread Maxwell. The 1986 Celtics playbook just doesn't work nearly as well when Maxwell is running off screens for open threes that he clearly can't shoot. So yeah, I kept Bird at SF. I also had to decide that with the thinner roster sizes of teams back then to just keep injured players and rate them accordingly.

There are three teams in the file that only had 11 players on the roster going into the playoffs. Lakers, Bucks & Sonics so I just added a lowly rated generic player named Richard Johnson to their final roster spot and zeroed out his minutes. I'm sure he may play a few in a blowout, but no biggie.

For season play you will need to move the Rockets & Spurs to the Eastern Conference and the Bucks & Bulls to the West. Unfortunately the Mavericks were an expansion team coming in the following season so they are another fake team/gimme win (or whatever you want to call it) I haven't downloaded any music for this season yet, but I plan to snag the tunes CBS used for this season off youtube. (Intro of Alive Again by Chicago & probably the earlier 70's NBA on CBS theme)

Link to see what the teams uni's looked like:
http://www.sportslogos.net/teams/list_by_league/6

Here are the teams & uni's that are to be used with this file:

Created Teams ( None of these teams had their uni's in the game and I worked on the created uni's to make them as close as possible)

Kansas City Kings
San Diego Clippers
Seattle Supersonics
Indiana Pacers
New Jersey Nets
Denver Nuggets

Classic Teams used
86 Bulls
86 Celtics
91 Lakers
95 Knicks (uni's not in the game, but these are probably closest)

Regular Teams
76ers (retro 4) I use this one for both home & away
Bucks (retro 2 home & away available)
Cavaliers (retro 2 home & away available)
Hawks (retro 3 home & away are closest match)(not the alt yellow of course)
Jazz (retro 1 for home & retro 3 green for away)
Pistons (retro 3 white, again I use for both home and away)
Rockets (retro 1 home & away available)
Spurs (retro 1 is closest match, I use for home & away)
Suns (retro 1 home & away available)
Blazers (retro 1 home & current red away)(They may have also worn the black)
Warriors (retro 5 yellow, I use home & away)
Bullets (retro 1 home & away available)

Re: NBA 2K11 1979-80 Season Roster (Xbox 360)

Amazing job on this!! Can't thank you enough!! I spent about 2 hours going over this last night, and it's a thing of beauty.

I did a few things for my personal file once I grabbed this: I zilched down all the depth chart minutes for those teams that are not being used.

There were 4 teams that only had 11 players, using the one fake player provided in game. I took those 4 players and made them a 25 overall, and I also took their tendencies and zeroed out most of their ratings so that they'll never even see the court.

ONE NOTE: I created Arvid Kramer for the Denver Nuggets. He was a simple creation (as I took one of your CAPS from another team not being used (Thunder) and made him. He actually signed a couple (I think) of 10-day contracts with Denver that year, and was then signed for the rest of the season. I believe he got into a small handful of games, and did basically nothing except block a bunch of shots. His story is unique (when I researched it): he only played for Denver. BUT, he was drafted by TWO expansion draft franchises. The following year by Dallas, and then a few short years later by Miami. He has the distinct recognition of being involved in TWO expansion drafts, yet NEVER playing for either of them.

This file brings back a lot of memories. For me, I was 8 years old during this NBA season, but I was just starting to follow basketball because of Magic & Larry... Thanks!!

Great job DreadedSteeler to bring back the good old 79-80 season. You know, I have 18 years old but I never really liked of todays NBA. I like of the 60s, 70s and 80s era of basketball, and 79-80 was the season that my two favorite players started in the NBA: BIRD AND MAGIC!!!!! Thanks again for this roster.

Thank you very much for the feedback, it means a lot! Not long ago I was thinking no way i'd do another one of these since it is so much work. Buuut I have been thinking of doing some of them... even though my memories of 76-77 are sketchy at best I would love to have a file from that season. Blazers & Sixers both have the uni's they wore that season in the game too (except Sixers home). I would recreate Bill Walton with the headband & ponytale and of course bigger hair on the Doctor. Then possibly Sonics championship season and any between 1980-85.

I figure i'll be playing this game at least until next-gen gets its system seller for me, NCAA Football... not holding my breath on that any time soon though.

Yeah, that 76-77 season was great. The Finals between Walton and the Blazers vs. Dr.J and The Sixers was memorable. That 78-79 Sonics championship season was pretty good too. The 79-80 was fantastic with Magic in his rookie year winning the Finals MVP against the 76ers and Bird winning the rookie of the year!

I like very much of 2K11, especially the gameplay, and now the possibility to play the 79-80 season in this game, thanks to you, put a big smile on my face!

About the next gen, I really don't see a reason for me to buy it now, because I play 2K11 and 2K12 a lot, because of their classic teams!!

Re: NBA 2K11 1979-80 Season Roster (Xbox 360)

This roster has given me the itch to maybe do another full season - thinking about working backwards from the 84-85 roster of portlandblazer and doing the previous year. Celtics won the title. Ralph Sampson was rookie of the year.

But we'll see...

Something I caught while looking over this file and doing some research: the Golden State Warriors traded Robert Parish and then drafted AND traded Jeff Ruland - in just 2 DAYS (June 9th and 10th). Man, talk about stupid...

Wow man very nice to see that!! [emoji1]

I've played your 2014-2015 season roster and felt like a 2K15 roster with all that levels of detail. Sure it will be fantastic if you decide to make a full detailed 84-85 season!

Thanks! If I do anything, it would probably be the 1983-84 season, as portlandblazer already did the 84-85 season. So I could star with his file and go backwards. It's aTON of work, so it would probably take me at least a month or two. I also got sucked into helping out with an updated MLB 2K13 file (which was my own doing as I LOVE baseball and we have a good group of guys working on that file together). So we'll see...
