2017: A Season in Review
by Peter Spink
We all know how the season ended for the Red Sox, with an epic 7 game World Series victory against the Chicago Cubs and Theo, but lets take a look back at how we got there.
The rumors started to pick up right before Thanksgiving. We had heard them before, the owners don't care anymore, they want to sell the team and focus on other business ventures. They had never held any salt then and so we assumed the same around town. Then two days after Thanksgiving we all awoke with something new to be thankful for, new owners! The old group was great once upon a time but recently seemed to fall into a trap of saying one thing and then doing the exact opposite. From gutting the farm system to signing high priced free agents that didn't seem to fit the team the team was in shambles behind closed doors. With a perceived lack of control in the clubhouse to the top of the organization, the time for a change had come. This change arrives in a new ownership group of local boys lead by Ernie Boch Jr, Sam Koch, and Arthur T. DeMoulas. Rumor has it another group fronted by Jonathan Kraft, James Davis and Wyc Grousbeck just missed out on the bid. We were introduced to Michael Olsen, the new GM and things only picked up from there. Mike sited the desire to make some serious changes to this group.
" From what I hear there are some serious attitude and leadership issues on this team. This organization has too much history and expectations for that to be the case. Change is coming and coming fast." Stated Olsen at his press conference.
He was not joking as on the second day of the winter meetings a trade was announced that surprised many. The Sox traded David Price and Drew Pomeranz to the Washington Nationals for Stephen Strasburg. A move instantly loved by the fan base and one that ingratiated Olsen into the hearts of many fans from the start.
"This is only the beginning of the restructure" he said. He followed up those words with international free agent signings to boost not only the major league club but also the depleted minor league system. Adding Alex Liddi to man the third base position was met with second guessing as he was not on many people's radar's, but was proven a shrude move as Liddi hit .304 with 28hr and 74 RBI. Olsen also added Shohei Otani, Shintaro Fujinami and Tetsudo Yamada to minor league deals. We will get more into these players down the line in our player review section. For now lets continue our focus on the rebuild. Mid season brought two major changes to the team. One the trading of JBJ t the Atlanta Braves for Ender Inciarte and Touki Toussaint, citing the need for a true leadoff hitter and wanting to add some depth to the minors. In a move that shocked many in the fan base, possible more than when Nomar was traded by Theo years ago was the trading of Dustin Pedroia at the trade deadline to the Texas Rangers for Rougned Odor.
" I think the time had come. Pedey meant so much to this team for so long but I really think he was part of that old regime more than anything. I don't feel he was leading this team the way we needed him to in the absence of David [Ortiz]" said Olsen when questioned about the move.
At the end of the day all these moves worked out for the best as the Red Sox finished with a 112-50 record, a team avg of .277 and a team ERA of 2.93. The future of this team is bright and we can only hope continues along this course.
Player Standouts for 2017:
Chris Sale: 33GS, 26 QS, 22-5, 236.1 IP, 2.51 ERA, 0.95 WHIP, 270K, 32BB. Cy Young and MVP award winner.
Stephen Strasburg: 33GS, 27QS, 20-5, 226 IP, 2.46 ERA, 1.02 WHIP, 259K, 29BB
Hanley Ramirez: .277avg, .324OBP, 35HR, 100 RBI, 87R( Silver Slugger, WS MVP)
Alex Liddi: .304 avg, .326 OBP, 28HR, 74 RBI, 75R.
Here is the write up for 2017. I made a some Bullpen moves too but I don't remember the exact moves so didn't want to put them in here. Up next I'll be doing a 2018 season preview of the Sox with each position/ position group broken down and with the top prospects in the organization. Constructive criticism is welcomed but don't be a dink please.
