Advice for BB noob

Hey everyone, I'm hoping for just a couple quick answers to some questions about NBA Live 19.

I'm not a big basketball fan but many other sports games have been turning me off so I'm looking to try something new and basketball has been looking pretty good this year. I've played a few in the past but haven't owned a LIVE game since 2001 with Kevin Garnett on the cover (showing my age) with NBA 2k13 being my next (and last) basketball game purchase.

While 2k has a solid rep I'm very against all the microtransactions and I've found the controls to be a bit too complex for my liking, even back on 2k13. I feel more like I'm playing Street Fighter trying to make my way through defenders rather than playing a sports game.

Are the controls in NBA Live more forgiving or are they just as complex? I'm referring more to the dribbling and moves to get around defenders, not things like passing and blocking/rebounding.

Are there simplified control options? I'm not going to be playing on the highest difficulties but I also don't want the game to be so easy that it's not fun either. Basically I'm just wondering if LIVE 19 may be good for someone that hasn't played much basketball and isn't really interested in 2k. I'd probably be playing franchise or THE ONE (career mode?) and not much else as online doesn't really interest me at all.

I'd appreciate any advice you guys can offer. Thanks!

Coming from someone who loved 18, it’s hard for me recommend this game to anyone, unless your into 60% sim 40% arcade gameplay. Your going have touch sliders cause default Cpu pretty easy unless your playing GSW. If your looking for a deep Franchise mode this ain’t it.

Well that sounds about what I'm looking for. I've been playing EA sports games, mostly Madden and NHL since the early 90s, so I know their default sliders are usually pretty garbage. Always spend hours tinkering to get them right for me. I prefer a more sim style approach but with a touch of arcade to keep it light and fun. I think a slightly heavier dose of arcade may be good for me here as I'm basically new to this sport.

My biggest concern is the controls though. I really hated 2ks controls the last one I played as I found them overly complex for a sports game but it was tough to play a decent game without using a lot of those moves so I got frustrated quickly. I'm going to see about trying the demo but was hoping for a little input from others as well. Just hoping Live's controls are a little more manageable for someone with my limited basketball experience as a casual player.

To answer your question Live’s control scheme is way more forgiving and easy to get in to. It’s not at all as complicated as 2k and it has some good mini game arrows for defense. And you won’t get angry about micro transactions as there’s not really any unless you do Ultimate team.

I think it depends on which modes you’re gonna be playing the most. 2ks franchise or MyGM mode is way better than Live. But depends on if you like deep and more complicated franchise (2k). If you just play franchise in 2k you don’t have to worry about micro transactions but there’s still the control scheme (but you can always play on rookie and you don’t have to worry to much). I’ve played 2k a lot and i still haven’t mastered drippeling but still enjoy the game.

On another note a lot think that LIVE will go on discount within long as it did last year.

Also depends what mode you play. Franchise or league should be pretty straight forward but to play The One you really need to play per your position and style. CPU tends to be be to over powered at times and really challenges you in some games. Some basic IQ will be needed to run pick n rolls and other play calling.

Thanks for the advice! I tried out the demo and really enjoyed it even though it was WAY more limited than I expected. The dribbling controls are definitely more forgiving than 2k which is fantastic for someone like me. Gameplay seemed easy to get in to and seeing all the different modes connected to The One gives you lots of options.

Ultimate team is also not for me so i'd either play franchise and/or The One. Since I don't have a lot of time for gaming right now and I don't plan on playing online I'll probably wait a bit for a price drop. IF the game ever comes out here. I live in Belgium and it's not even listed on any sites yet for all the game and toy stores I can find. 2k is on all the shelves already though, and on PSN they both cost €70 which is outrageous. Hopefully I can find it used pretty soon or with a price cut in a few months because €70 for ANY game is ridiculous.

Re: Advice for BB noob

If you plan on not playing online and focus on franchise, I would say 2k. I would not worry about the dribbling just play it on rookie till you get a feel. It’s just a more solid build franchise and tons of offline modes you can do, and no you don’t need to buy VC. Plus the mygm is pretty fun if you choose to build a team from scratch up. You can upload your own logos that you can use to create your court and jerseys, if you’re in to that kinda thing. Pretty fun as you feel like it’s really your team trying to get good players.

If you plan on playing online with a myplayer then yeah do live the one as it’s easier to pick up games and no need for spending more money.
