The OS Daily Ten - Washington Redskins May Be Forced to Change Name Stuck
Posted on May 3, 2013 at 10:32 AM.

Top Sports News for Friday, May 3, 2013

1. Debate over racist tone of 'Redskins' could lead to name change.
A poll conducted by the Associated Press shows approximately 80% of people asked have no problem with the 'Redskins' name for Washington, D.C's prized NFL franchise. Despite the support, several movements are underway that could lead to a name change -- including congressional action. One suggested name, 'Red Tails', refers to the Tuskegee Airmen who were the subject of quite a bit of racism themselves. If the 'Skins change their name, a less-political or controversial choice might be the way to distance themselves from the current hot-topic issue.

2. 'Dirty play' by Nuggets? That'll be $25,000.
Warriors coach Mark Jackson was slapped with a fine by the NBA after comments the league said were an attempt to influence officiating. Golden State's Steph Curry was roughed up in a game five loss to Denver, most notably by Kenneth Faried who appeared to stick a leg out as Curry drove the lane on one play. The Warriors, however, weren't exactly angels themselves as they tallied two flagrant fouls to none for the Nuggets.

3. If you thought ESPN already shows a lot of SEC games, just wait for 2014.
Apparently the SEC wasn't happy stealing your state's top football talent; now they're coming after your best volleyball players too. It's not quite 'four scores', but one score (as in, twenty years) is how long the SEC and ESPN have signed on as partners. Each year it's estimated that at least 1,000 live SEC events will be aired on ESPN's family of networks -- including 45 football games.

4. MLB umpire Hallion fined for 'F-bomb', Price and others hit as well.
5. Disrespectful? Knicks players dawn 'funeral black' before playoff loss.
6. 'Hecklers Welcome': MLB players' favorite on-field sounds.
7. Saad one of many rookies impacting NHL playoffs.
8. Duke officially inks two-time Illinois' Mr. Basketball, top recruit Parker.
9. Rockets' controversial rookie taunts Thunder stars on Twitter.
10. Former Seminole quarterback, Clint Trickett, has transferred to West Virginia.

QOTD: Should the Washington Redskins be forced to change their name? If so, what would be a suitable replacement?

Hmm, I think many would use the "80% of people asked have no problem" line as evidence that there's no need for a change, I just don't think I can get behind that one.

I understand that many fans are going to take issue with changing a longtime name that is connected with a lot of history of that franchise, but just because it's always been that way doesn't mean it's right.

For what could be considered a derogatory term by many, especially Native Americans, and given the ugly history it's tied to (plus, Native Americans were sometimes scalped, which was then sold) I don't see how it can be considered acceptable any longer.

As for a good replacement, I'm not sure. Put it up to a fan vote on several different options, I guess.

If all those college teams changed than the Washington _______ need to change too. It truly shows the arrogance of SOME White people in this country, to have such a name and to consistently refuse to change is American Racism at it's finest. The Atlanta Braves mascot is ridiculous as well!

Why does it have to be just WHITE people BengalsFan99? That's just as racist by narrowing it down to one group

The Negro Leagues in baseball had names such as Black Crackers and the Black Yankees. A sense of pride was in those names. Seminole tribe takes pride in the Florida St mascot name. America awards every child for participating and has become overly sensitive, weak, and too politically correct

@BengalsFan99 I think it shows the arrogance of people that a name of a sports team should bother anybody. People are making something out of nothing. If you don't like it, then don't watch them.

"The Negro Leagues in baseball had names such as Black Crackers and the Black Yankees. A sense of pride was in those names." Those names were chosen by black people.

"Why does it have to be just WHITE people BengalsFan99?" The Redskins, Indians, Braves, Blackhawks, etc., who do you think named those teams? I'll tell you who had zero input in the names, the Native American community. That's the difference.

I'm from Cleveland and as a young man I didn't see anything wrong with the name either. Now, I hate to say it but the name and especially the mascot need to be changed as well.

"I think it shows the arrogance of people that a name of a sports team should bother anybody." This is from a poster that was printed in the 80's. The Pittsburgh Negroes, Kansas City Jews, San Diego Caucasians, Cleveland Indians, with the line, "Maybe now you know how Native Americans feel." underneath those pennants.

The name is just wrong, plain and simple.

If you go after the Redskins then you have to go after the Buccaneers also. I mean that could offend a pirate. What about the Yankees? Aren't people that live in the northern states called Yankees. I live in New York so if I go down south I'm considered a Yankee. So if one team has to change then they all have to change.

Get over it people, they are bigger problems in this country then worrying about a sports teams name.

And no, I wouldn't be offended if a team was called the Caucasians.
