Absolutely a smart decision. Why not extend the contract? What else is out there? Nothing. Stafford's middle of the road right now with a huge upside. They also didn't dish him insane money or length like Romo or Flacco. It's enough of an extension for the Lions to make a solid decision on Stafford while not paying him top 10 money. If he busts then they dump him and find something else in the future. If he shines then they can give him top quarterback money.

Smart Move! Great QBs don't grow on trees,even above Average QBs are hard to find. Dumping Stafford would place them back at square 1.

Um, Stafford is already the best QB the Lions have ever had. Of course it's a smart move. And I'd be willing to bet he has the strongest arm in the league. His upside and physical tools make him one of the best young QB's out there.
