Madden 2010 News Post

Madden NFL 10 is finally here. I have to admit that the juices started to flow as soon as I heard John Madden say for the first time, "The time to make history starts right now." The intro, which features the cover athletes Larry Fitzgerald and Troy Polamalu, might be one of the best Madden intros ever, and it doesn't stop there as Madden puts it, "I have a feeling, this one is going to be special." Could he be right? Read on to find out.

No. I was saying (imo) he fell into the same hole a lot of reviewers seem to when judging Madden; overlooking much of what he should've been critical of simply because this is the only football game on the market and we all love/need football. As Rocky alluded to earlier, because of NFL exclusivity I can see where it's difficult to judge the game properly.

It's a difficult thing to articulate but here goes: I don't know what standard Madden should be held to. It's the only sports game where there's literally no competition. So in some ways I'd think a reviewer would have to judge the game in part by using an admittedly subjective set of rules, extrapolating what should be expected of a football game. While also using how other sports games in other genres have progressed as a loose measurement. One thing's for sure - we sure as hell shouldn't be pointing to 5yr old last gen football games as some standard. Nor should Madden's poor showing so far next gen be the only thing the game should be measured against. I think that's a big reason why reviews are all over the place; because so many reviewers look at the game and are thankful it doesn't suck - instead of having some standard it should be held to

Just wanted to say: don't know if you remember, but I gave you HUGE props for your APF review. To this day I don't think I've ever read a review that went into such detail regarding different facets of the gameplay, you seemed to have a set expectation of things, etc. I only contrasted it against your Madden 09 review because it's remarkable that a year later you didn't really seem to have that same expectation level. In retrospect, I think you M09 review is actually more detailed than the current M10 review - but that's neither here nor there. Just saying that I don't think you held Madden to the same expectation you held APF from a gameplay standpoint. And imo that shouldn't be the case. EDIT: And that's not a "2K5/APF" thing. I'd throw last gen Madden as shouldn't be held as a standard bearer also.

I agree with you somewhat that if there was a direct comparison Madden 08 was the better value, even then. But that wasn't the discussion - I don't think the same things could be expected of the two games because one's licensed and the other isn't. But you would think that if one was to have more expected of it from a gameplay standpoint it would be Madden, simply because it's the less restricted title. MORE should be expected of it. Yet too often we get reviews where the reviewer comes off as surprised/happy something works, rather than expecting that something to meet a certain level of expectation.

Anybody see Gamespot gave it a 7.5?

Of course, as soon as I complain that the IGN head to head PS3 vs 360 comparison wouldn't probably be available for a couple of weeks, they go and post it today, a day before Madden is officially released. Clap, clap!

And as people have stated earlier, the two games are indeed essentially the same. So I'll flip a coin to decide if I want to get the PS3 or 360 version. So many choices in life!

The OS way:
Let's give a good honest review of the game, and then give it a higher score then expected after reading the review. That way, the people that come to this site get a good review, but we also please the dev's with a high score that doesn't mesh with the actual review.
Um... no one is forcing you to read it.

I understand what you are saying, but I just don't fell a reviewer goes into a review of a game and tries to compare it to a game that came out 5 yrs ago or a few years ago.

I believe they compare it with other Maddens and if they truly like the feel of the game.

Let's take a look at the basketball games.

I don't see too many reviewers talking about the other game. They talk about what's new and improved with the game they are reviewing and if it's better than prior years. I don't know, but I don't see too many reviews where a reviewer will claim that 2k basketball is better than NBA Live.

I think you need to step inside the shoes of a game reviewer instead of a sim player.

Just my thoughts.

I was excited for this game until reading through this thread. Seems its going to be another year of one step forward, two steps back.

Or...is it?

MWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!

LOL, you'd be in here screaming bloody murder if he rated it a 6.

I can wait. I will actually rent Madden this year before picking it up.

It's amazing to me that the game has been slowed down and that's supposed to be a good thing.

The game of football is not getting slower. It's getting faster.

I'm sorry but from the demo one of the fastest backs in the league seemed as if he was stuck in mud.

There are 5 different speed options.

Awesome review man....

I can't waite to get the game this weekend. One thing i love hearing is that ratings truly matter. I'm huge fan of ratings being a major factor in game play and it appears Madden 10 is going to allow me to do some incredible individual game play tweaks (sliders) this year for myself.

I haven't enjoyed the game or played it that much in the last 3 years. So, Madden 10 for me is going to be very refreshing after reading all the positive reviews.

Thanks!

You're just an arcade like player. Madden wasn't made for you.

Now I'm really excited since OS gave it a good review! First Madden game since 2005 that I've bought on release day. I'll be playing all day and night this weekend.

the game is bad...its lucky it got a 7.5 by Gamestop....It is a 4 in my book..The game is ****ty

Not bad on the review but I disagree with the score. I understand they've taken leaps and bounds to change the game with a few features but that doesn't mean they've fixed important stuff like broken animations and blocking.

You might want to edit out the "king of football" bit. It's the ONLY football game on the market. How can it be the king?

8.8

9 seems too high. It may be the best football game there has been ever, but lets face it, football gaming is still miles behind the leaders in other sports. The 9 puts it in the same range as other top sports games which seems a real stretch. I feel the series is going in a positive direction and they made a lot of upgrades, but the franchise was in really bad shape last year.

I guess I don't see it in the same league as games like The Show and the NHL series. Both games were vastly superior sports gaming experiences yet rated right around the same. I don't even know if it hits the level FIFA is at which received an 8 last year. FIFA has better gameplay for its sport and right around the same issues with it's franchise/manager mode. I thought FIFA was underated though and deserved an 8.5. That would probably put Madden around the 7.5 or 8 category which compared to the 6.5 I give last years is a great improvement.

And I'd agree. But the fact that older and/or more disadvantaged games compare favorably to Madden at this point makes it a factor. It's kind of stretching it to be understanding in year one or two. It's pretty much unforgiveable in year five. Imo that should factor into how Madden is being judged and weigh negatively against it [appropriately]. Not giving a rating that infers that Madden has somehow become as good as the best sports games in other genres, when it's not being held to the same standard those other games are.
