MLB 14 The Show News Post

Operation Sports recently got the chance to play MLB 14 The Show on PlayStation 4. There is a lot to love about the experience, including the absolutely beautiful visuals which accompany the game. Don't get too excited about huge gameplay changes, Sony has opted to carefully move up to next-gen with the same great experience we've all grown accustomed to.

I guess I'm the only one having problems seeing it. I can't see it on my desktop or iPhone. Could y'all upload it on to YouTube.

Thanks, Glenn! Great article! This is probably the most important statement to consider when looking at this generational change of MLB The Show. People say "this game made a true jump to next-gen" or "gameplay changed so much with this game" but truth is, The Show was already at the height of gaming, and had a lot less to jump. And it will only get better going forward.

The biggest upgrade is obviously the visuals and presentation though, and it’s quite impressive. I started with AT&T Park, and the impact of the numerous upgrades was immediate. It’s an odd sensation though, since the PS3 version already runs at 60 frames. To some, it may actually take a few minutes to start noticing what has changed, especially since most of the animations have been moved over to the PS4 as well. It really does stand as a testament to how fantastic the game has been on PS3, but what you’ll find is what limits that system had, because now the huge increase in resources is being put to good use. Textures are much more detailed and colors are more accurate with a much higher amount of gradients. Sunglasses are now truly transparent, and you can even see the player’s eyes moving behind them.

Noticed a slight improvement in daytime light (clearly unpegged but the previous look was airway pretty accurate) but holy crap was that night time lighting amazing. I never could put my finger on why night games in the show didn't look as real as they could but now I can.

Similar sentiments for how players look when in the shade on the field.

They did a great job with the lighting.

Anyone looking for a gameplay overhaul this year was only fooling themselves. This year is all about 1080p 60fps baseball. Being on a message board and being apart of a small percentage, you should know how these sports cycles go by now.

I personally couldn't play the PS3 version knowing a much much better version was coming a month later.

Yes sir. Been to a ton of Curve games since Altoona was 15 minutes from my house. Always cool to see (in MLB2K at least, not sure about the Show) that they had that minor league stadium down with the roller coaster just past the right field wall.

The lighting really looks incredible. I get the feeling it's going to be like playing The Show for the first time again. The PS3 version is great, but it's starting to show its age and lose a little of its luster.

But I'm most happy about getting the same game with all of the same great features. They could have stripped down some of the modes (*cough* NBA 2K *cough*) in the interest of pumping out the game solely with better graphics. Kudos for not doing that.

So excited for this. Personally, I was hoping for a graphics overhaul and nothing else for this first PS4 version. And it looks like I got it! I still don't think the players will stack up to those on NBA 2k14, but the stadiums look fantastic. And my one major gripe with graphics on sports games over the years has been that night games never looked good. Most of my exhibition games have been set to "day" times to avoid looking at it, but this game is definitely going to have me playing night games way more!

That's what I genuinely want to know as well. I think people think we are being flippant when we ask these questions. Same for when I was asking about stadium issues.

Ramone talked about what the big difference maker was in the PSNation interview, and pointed out that on PS3, (most) people didn't notice what was missing. Once apparent, you really get a feel for how amazingly improved the lighting is on PS4.

I know. I think the problem most people have are paying $60 for the same experience year after year. While SCEA San Diego probably gives the most bang for the buck year over year for a sports game, there is some sort of preconceived idea that a lot has to change to make it worth it. If it doesn't meet that idea, then it's garbage.

I understand that argument and am not totally against it. However, if you want more changes year over year, then the developing studio needs more resources. So from that point of view, I don't have a problem paying full price because that should translate into more/improved features/gameplay the following year.

This is all I ever wanted/expected: the great gameplay of The Show with better graphics. Man they even added new features like quick counts and new dynamic cams. What's not to like?! Now show us Ichiro swinging!

Glenn do you know why there is no Rosen bag on the mound still in the PS4 version? Is this something Sony is planning to add in the future? I would think the power of the PS4 should now allow this.

Also your video is just blank for me is it working for anyone else?

The PS3 version added a ton to the gameplay this year already, so my jump for MLB 13 on PS3 to MLB 14 on PS4 will be massive. I don't know what people expect when it comes to gameplay either, as it seems just about perfect as is. However, I would like new running and pitching animations over the next few years. Maybe even new player models, but I'm still extremely satisfied as is.

My only question (and this is for Phillies fans) pertains to the dirt color in Citizens Bank Park. It seems a little... pale, or dark. Is this accurate for night games there? I've seen quite a bit on TV and it just seems off to me. But I could be wrong.

Now that's what I am talking about next gen gaming with added touches, it doesn't get any better than this, hurry up May 6th. Kudos to SCEA San Diego!!!

Best sports game by far. I can't wait for May 6th.

As far as I know, the Rosin bag will be in the game, and will be a separate object finally. Things can always change before release though, so take that for what it is.

Rebuilt stadiums and yet citizens bank Park still has the wrong LED boards in right field?

Maybe to some degree. But I really like the approach SCEA took with the PS4 version compared to EA's approach with Madden on the 360. No need to start from scratch with an already stellar engine. Just build on what's there. The two things I'm most hoping to see fixed are the simulated stats 5-6 (and beyond) in franchise and the dramatic drop off of ratings for good players at the age of 29-30.

This is baseball people it's the same game year in and year out. I love this game and it will play the same just like I played the same game in college for 4 years. See ball, hit ball, catch ball, throw ball. Then of course you have some sick plays you make from time to time. What do y'all want? super jumps to jump way higher to rob home runs, fire on the bat to launch the ball farther, rocket shoes to go faster on gap to gap hits? Hah all these ideas sound stupid! So keep this game how it's supposed to be. An actual baseball game where the same s#*+ happens on a daily basis lol!! This game is amazing just the way it is
