...But for now these were just some more gameplay impressions as I know several people on here have been looking for in-depth reporting of how the game actually is when played. Perhaps this week I will try and stream a game so that some of you could watch and see the issues and good things that I am noticing when playing as well.
Would you mind throwing these slider tweaks up in the slider forum? I haven't had a chance to try much tweaking/testing myself yet. Would love to try a couple people's set ups.
Updated impressions after playing the full game for some time now...
Likes:
- Puck physics are way way better than before
- Graphics are great
- Presentation is good
- Hockey atmosphere is definitely there
- Slower game pace for a more realistic gameplay
- Interceptions and deflections on players, which result in more loose pucks
- Toned down deking for a more realistic gameplay
- Shot release feels and looks better
Dislikes:
- Not possible to edit players, change jersey numbers or save custom strategies
- Unbalanced gameplay, with offense overpowered compared to defense
- Sticks go through things (players, other sticks, nets, boards)
- Hitting and collisions detection isn’t good at all
- Poke checking is too restrictive, not effective enough and with no left to right control on the stick
- Even if it's better, general AI still needs work and AI players still don't use their sticks enough
- Goalies are weak in some situations and would definitely need an overhaul next year
- Even if I saw the CPU missing sometimes, there are still way too many tape to tape passes
- No new gameplay sliders and still only with a 0 to 6 scale
Yeah they do seem to have a distinct impact. For me even on hardcore the game plays too docile. There is way too much open space and the puck is possessed way too much. I found that lowering things like puck control and passing accuracy and increasing things like aggression, poke effectivess and interceptions made a huge difference in terms of making the game play a more "chippy" game of hockey. I also turned down wrist, one-timer and slapshot accuracy, and you see a lot more shots going wide and ripping off the back boards. This also helps decrease shot totals for the CPU (they really spam shots, especially on cross-crease one-timers). I also upped goalie screen effect and saw some point shot goals. The actual on-ice gameplay is better than it has been in (although fairly similar).
Good stuff. You hit almost every slider I earmarked after playing the demo. Hardcore style is closer to what I'd like to see, but it's not quite there.
My biggest issue with the gameplay is that passes only goes from tape to tape. Its like we are back to NHL 06 all over again. You can't pass using the board. It's a step backward compare to where we were. This is the game breaking mechanic to me.

You can pass using the boards.. I do it all the time.
Could someone tell me how the simulated stats are for the CPU over the course of the season? In Be a GM I would like for the CPU stats to be somewhat realistic in terms of goal and points leaders, team scoring avg., goalie save pct., etc. Much appreciated for any responses.
I can't wait to play the Blackhawks.. I got one for him.
I can't wait to play the Blues. It's good to have a classic rivalry back where both team are actually good. I would be very surprised if the Blues don't win a Cup over the next five years, possibly this year. The Western Conference is ridiculous. Don't mean to derail the thread, back on topic...
So far I'm enjoying the game play quite a bit, but the goalies seem to let in everything. The computer is tearing me up at the moment even on Pro. I can generally outscore them, but it feels like my goalie is pretty easy to score on.
Great gameplay...except for the lack of penalties. No excuse for it. I'm not sure what it is, but it has to be some sort of philosophy among devs that penalties and fouls take away the fun factor in games.
Minimal penalties in NHL, rarely do fouls get called in FIFA, and finally the penalty situation in Madden. I'm sick of the excuses as to why this never gets handled.
I didnt see a Impressions thread so ill post here , On gameplay alone this game is amazing if you can blend it with your skill level and sliders and AlTitos sliders are a great base to start , cant wait for 3 stars and Playoff mode free add on !
Im giving this game a 10/10 stars on Gameplay , AI , atmosphere , presentation and visuals alone and by far my sports game of the year after 9 games and what a great foundation as I get what EA was trying to do even though they messed up the PR .
But on in game functions and modes a 3 out of 10 stars and 7 years later they still dont have a in game slider save and when you start a GM mode you still have to re enter all your slider changes ? looks like they just transferred over alot of the bad crappy buggy stuff from the ps3 but with new display screens and menus ?
