M's Morrow to close in 2009

Quote:
"Once they traded J.J. [Putz], I thought, I kept going back and forth and back and forth," he said, adding that he told the Mariners of his decision roughly a week ago. "I just felt like a big relief when I went back to the bullpen, because I feel that's like my home now. I've been there two years and I don't know if I could go back [to starting]."

And he has no plans to try. Morrow met with Mariners coaches and front-office members early Sunday; they are on-board with the decision and released relief pitcher Tyler Walker a few hours later.

This comes as big news for the M's, who at the start of spring training had as many as six contenders for the closers job.

This comes as a big blow to the Mariner's rotation, with possibly Miguel Batista taking Morrow's spot. Beyond that, former Georgia star Josh Fields, the M's first pick last year, who is not to far from the majors appears to be without a spot to pitch with Morrow declaring himself the closer.

Morrow's value on the trade market also takes a hit with this news, and I know many M's fans would really have preferred him to remain in the rotation because of this alone.
