To anyone who read my Backbreaker Review, you know I've royally trashed the game's quality in the past. But I've also tried to remain consistent with the game being a lasting lesson to sports game developers that there is a different approach than the 'God-angle' many of the games have gone with in the past few years.

To truly simulate a sport, the best way to do so is to get you closer to the action, Backbreaker did just that. However, the game couldn't get the basic tenets of football down, so while the effort was to be honored -- it was still a very bad game at the end of the day.

Until today.

Backbreaker's patch, announced today, looks to completely change the game from the bottom up. The improvements will almost certainly take Backbreaker from a completely atrocious game to at least a somewhat passable game and possibly beyond that. However, what I feel the patch really does is leave a lasting legacy in the minds of gamers on how a company should handle the position of being in the wrong.

The Cages: Pro Style Batting Practice is a product, that in my opinion, fails in two critical areas. First, despite the name, it certainly does not succeed in re-creating a "pro style" batting cage. Secondly, it's not much of a game, at least in the traditional sense of games being "fun" and "entertaining."

The Cages attempts to be a virtual batting cage, offering you batting practice from the comfort of your own living room. To this end, I found little to like about the game.

As many of you may know already -- and if you don't it's okay because I'm about to enlighten you -- NCAA's dynasty mode is horribly broken this year.

Since EA Tiburon made the decision to rate recruits lower coming into school (but yet I guess forget to work on the progression of the game), most teams end up with middle of the road talent after years 4 or 5. It's like all of the football talent in America dries up after this year and all you are left with are a bunch of players rated in the 70s. I did a sim to see how bad it was and my Oklahoma Sooners went from a team with A ratings to a team with C+ ratings, yet they still won the Big XII in Year 7 with that kind of talent. Mostly because Texas had slipped to a team with C-s across the board. Baylor actually was rated as D+ (roughly where such powerhouses as UL Monroe and Western Kentucky lie today).

To me -- this just shows how horribly stale Dynasty mode is in NCAA.

Today marks my second review using my blog. I just want to remind everyone these are meant to be a supplement to our already awesome reviews. Both of our official reviews will be released later this week since our writers didn't get the game until release and we kind of still believe in writing good in-depth reviews. But for today, here is my take on MLB '10: The Show:

Quote:
"And then there was MLB '10: The Show.

Last year, I thought The Show was the pinnacle of our genre. It represented the sport of baseball better than any game had before it, it was oozing with atmosphere, and despite a few minor flaws, the game was simply amazing.

That whole experience is even better this year. No game has ever simulated the sport of baseball nearly as well as MLB '10: The Show simulates the sport, it is simply a must own for anyone who even remotely considers themselves a baseball fan."

I'm debuting a new review format I'm going to use going forward with my blog and the first game up is MLB 2K10. Just keep in mind a couple of things: First, this is a supplement to OS' Official Reviews which will be their usual deep and informative selves. Second, our guys didn't get early copies of the baseball games so look for our official baseball game reviews to be coming later in the week. Caley Roark has MLB 2K10 covered while Christian McLeod is all over MLB '10: The Show!

Quote:
"MLB 2K9 was bad. Atrociously bad. It was a half star to a one star on my ratings scale.

MLB 2K10 on the other hand, is everything MLB 2K9 wasn't. It is relatively bug free, it plays decent and while there are nagging issues which a patch will have to take care of, the game is by and large respectable and a huge improvement over last year's title.

The first thing you notice when you hop into MLB 2K10 is that it does everything a lot better than last year. The execution and the flow of the game, much less the looks, are much better than last year's game. The AI is smarter, the game plays more like baseball, and I totally dig the pitching/hitting system."

The long-lasting Dynasty/Franchise/Association/Manager Modes began to really take hold about the same time Operation Sports came into existence. While we do not want to take credit for dynasty modes existing, you definitely cannot deny the correlation there either. Of course, this obviously also makes us undisputed experts in all matters relating to dynasty modes -- at least, that is our story if anyone calls us out.

Once again, readers and staff members alike overwhelmingly believed one choice among all of the nominees stood out above the rest, and that choice was NBA 2K10's Association mode. Association mode received almost 90 percent of the staff vote and 61 percent of the reader vote -- the latter of which is very impressive given the amount of diversity among OS readers. Association mode features complete NBA.com immersion, relevant commentary, a customizable NBA Draft, excellent player-management tools, and that's really only scratching the surface of what the mode offers. If you are a fan of dynasty modes, NBA 2K10's Association mode will make you a very happy camper.
