2K10 help please

Long story short, I'm a football guy. I have played a few NBA video games over the years, however, it was never "my thing." I recently purchased a used copy of NBA 2K10 and I fel in love with the presentation and how nice it loks. It appears to me to be a well made game overall as well.

The thing is, I hardly know anything about basketball and even less how to play this game well. I know a number of people, including myself, who are willing and able to teach people how to play football and football video games. I was wondering if the same was true here.

Are there any good links, videos, tips, etc? I prefer to play "simulation style." That is to say, as true to NBA style as possible, so I don't want any cheep tricks if I can avoid them.

Thank you in advance.

P.S. Being from Northern California I like the Sacramento Kings. I don't care that they have only had a handful of good seasons, players like Bibby, Peja, and Divoc were fun to watch imo. I'd love to learn how to play this game well and rebuild my Kings into another fast break offense team that can compete for a crown in franchise mode

Re: 2K10 help please

The NBA 2K forum bogs down a little around this time of year, not as many people post so I don't think it was anyone's intention to ignore you.

My piece of advice for an NBA 2K10 beginner would be to utilize the in-game tutorials to the fullest (Game Modes > Tutorials). This will at least provide you with information as to how to complete moves whilst ballhandling and operating in the post. I don't think much of anyone can play through the tutorial once and memorize all the information, so I say don't worry if you only pick up little bits and pieces at a time.

In game situations, if you're struggling to make something happen on offense, I'd suggest slowing down and allowing your point guard to set up the offense. Without you the user calling a play, your team will still set picks and run off screens if you take your time with the point guard. Finding a player coming off a screen is a nice way to make something happen.

Another strategy on offense would be to learn the "B Button" (XBox) or "Circle Button" (PS3) commands:
-Holding B will call for a pick and roll. A forward or center will set a pick for the ballhandler then roll to the basket.
-Holding L2 and B will call for a "pick and pop" where a forward or center will pick for the ballhandler then spot up for a jumpshot.
-Tapping B will have your forward or center step up, fake a pick, then dive to the basket.

Finally, on defense I'd concentrate on just keeping your man in front of you. Constantly reaching for a steal is tempting but carries a low success rate. Further, it often leads to open opportunities for the opponent. If you struggle guarding the ballhandler, then I'd suggest guarding someone off the ball. Holding the right stick toward an offensive player without the ball will "deny him" or body him up.

Re: 2K10 help please

hey sorry nobody gave you any advice in 4 days. I'll give you some as a big basketball fan.

1. Go to the OS slider section, and download one of them that has received much praise in it's thread. Sliders make a difference in this game.

2. Download someone like Nogster's 2.0 roster, or maybe Rashidi's so you have good rosters. 2k's aren't very good for simulating.

3. If I were you I'd switch the control settings to the one where B is crossover, and Y is spin. Then it makes isomotion so much easier. Here are some tutorials on dribbling and the shotstick.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bIDIi...eature=related
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zB7hZyr1MmM

4. For strategy, here is some basic stuff. First check your ratings, to see everybody's strength and weaknesses. For example, Ray Allen is great at 3's, Kendrick Perkins is not. So obviously only shoot 3's with people above a 70+ rating. If you have a great blocker, like Dwight Howard, maybe control him even when he's not guarding the ball, in hopes that when somebody comes near the rim, you can block him. Also, find who your best defender is. Let's say your the Lakers and Ron Artest is your best defender. Well, match him up to the other team's best offensive player, as long as their is not a reasonable height disadvantage.

5. How to play sim: Basically don't run around in circles trying to go baseline all day, don't just jack 3's or shoot really really close to the paint. Use the mid-range game. What I do is when I get by a player by one step and I don't have a clear line, I pull up and shoot over my defender, or press B and put the left stick away from the hoop(I think, it could be Y or X), and my player takes a step back to create a little more room. On defense, don't try and steal the ball constantly. I only try and steal the ball when I'm a very good stealer (once again check ratings), or a big man is under the hoop and is about to score.

6. Run plays. Personally I don't like to run them too much, but every couple trips down the floor, I like to press one. I usually run plays for my core star players or if I see a mis-match for one of my players. If your a slow-tempo (check coach profiles to see how your team likes to play) team then run a lot of set plays. If your a balanced tempo team I run plays every once in a while, and if your a up-balanced tempo team run and shoot at the best oppurtunity, and only run plays when the other team has all the momentum, or if you need a score late in the game. To run successfully, once you get a rebound pass it to your point guard who is the outlet, then I usually look to run middle, where I get my wings running to my side, who will sometimes be open for 3, or cutting to the basket for a lay-up. But if you do not have numbers (meaning more offensive players than defense) don't force it.

7. For franchise mode, download Vyaras' draft class so you get future NBA players in your draft class, instead of bad 2k generated rookies. Also, if you do any trades, post them in the Rate Your Trade Thread, since it is hard to do realistic trades in the NBA. A lot of it has to deal with money, instead of talent. Also I reccomend controlling all 30 teams or else the CPU will do ridiculous trades and ruin association. All you have to do is just set everything to auto except trades and then once in a while do some trades. Once again our Rate Your Trade thread has many good reccomendations for teams.

8. If you don't know much about teams you should probably read an NBA preview, (check Sports Illustrated), or just PM me and I'll give you a breakdown on every team. This is important to know how to play a team, and how to deal with them in association mode.

If you have any more questions just ask, and I'll try my best to answer. Have fun, because this is one of the best games I've ever played.

^ZihinMaster's tutorials are the best and can be used for any basketball game.
