No, you can't update to this year's roster. There was 1 roster update, but it was around 2008-2009.

so the next question for those of us who bought the game post that update, how do we that we do or dont have the new roster? is there a player that makes it obvious?

Yes-someone who has the roster update would have to use a flash drive to save it and put it online. I've been asked about it; I simply don't know the process to do it.
