Re: 2k23 Screen Rant interview
While I personally loved the rebuilt design of 2K22, and like the paper, rock, scissors implementation of guessing moves to reverse, there were a lot of untouched portions of the engine by Yukes that I hoped they would tackle this year (such as the primary reversal system, weapons, tables, and such).
Honestly, I'm underwhelmed by the Gameplay advances, more that I see little (besides making stamina more prominent and a new pin kickout meter). Many have shared this sentiment, but couldn't answer much of what changes they'd like to see. I'll elaborate what I believe would enhance the game, and these are basically tuning ideas than redesigns.
I hated reversal stocks in Yukes games. I thought they were a terrible addition. It was also stupid that some wrestlers would have 3 stocks and some would have 5. I hated them because once you used them, you can just put the controller down, watch yourself get your butt kicked, while waiting for your stocks to replenish.
However, with the ability to block, dodge, and guess opponent inputs for reversals, I believe reversal stocks should come back (all wrestlers get five). The difference here is, if you ran out of stocks, you still can reverse by the guessing system. You still can block and dodge. Neither you could do in Yukes offerings. This would cut back on the constant back and forth of reversals caused by the general reversal system. I believe it would add a great layer of Gameplay to the game.
I believe the new combo system for strikes started in 2K22 should have carried over to weapons in order to make weapon usage more dynamic and free flowing. As it is, it's like two different Eras of Yukes and Visual Concepts design in the game, and it is disjointed. Carrying over the combo system to weapon usage would add more flair and be more dynamic while also feeling there's added control.
I'd like to see the stamina system affect the general reversal timing (not the guessing mechanic but the main reversal system). If you're fatigued, then reversal timing is stricter.
Lastly, the stun mechanic looks unchanged. The stamina system in 2K23 may work in balancing it out as mashing a button will be less effective, but I think if you're stunned, you still should have access to the guessing mechanic. You don't reverse while stunned, but each time you guess a move, the stun meter depletes an immediate 10%. This gives the stunned player a purpose to stay engaged, and forces the attacking player to still be focused on variety in their attack.
