Critically acclaimed franchise to give fans early start to this year’s MyCAREER experience, ability to play collegiate games and more!

2K today announced “The Prelude,” a free downloadable experience for NBA 2K17, the top-rated and top-selling NBA video game simulation series*, which will be available on September 9, 2016. For the first time in NBA 2K history, gamers – both new and old – will get to start their MyCAREER experience prior to the game’s launch on September 20, 2016 on Xbox One and PlayStation®4 computer entertainment systems. Gamers who download “The Prelude” will choose from multiple authentic Division I collegiate programs and have the ability to boost their stock for the NBA Draft. Additionally, “The Prelude” experience will include enhanced MyPlayer personalization through new mobile phone face scan technology via the MyNBA2K Companion App, and an all–new tutorial mode in 2KU, featuring 2016 USA Basketball Coach Mike Krzyzewski (“Coach K”).

“The Prelude was designed specifically to introduce new fans to our franchise, and give them an introduction to our legendary MyCAREER mode that puts the user at the center of an epic basketball story,” said Greg Thomas, President of Visual Concepts. “Veterans of NBA 2K will also love getting a head start on their MyCAREER, so when the game launches they can be ready to jump in and compete.”

During “The Prelude”, players will watch their draft stock fluctuate dynamically based on their performance across the participation of multiple authentic college games. In true cinematic form, they’ll also catch a glimpse of exclusive MyCAREER scenes through their customized avatar, which include interactions with high school coaches, teammates, and more. Players’ in-game performance during college play will ultimately influence where they are drafted upon entering the league in NBA 2K17.

“The incredible excitement during the first week of NBA 2K16’s launch showed us there was an opportunity to connect with even more fans prior to the formal release of NBA 2K17,” said Alfie Brody, VP of Marketing for NBA 2K. “We think we’ve given our passionate community something special with this year, and can’t wait to see the response from not only existing fans, but new ones as well.”

Included in “The Prelude” is 2KU, a tutorial featuring Coach K, focused on fundamental basketball strategies including pick and roll execution, proper defensive positioning, ball movement, boxing out, court awareness and more. Gamers can also use the MyNBA2K17 iOS and Android companion app to scan their facial likeness into their MyCAREER avatar within minutes. This new mobile phone camera fan scan technology serves as the perfect introduction to the custom experience, as players begin playing MyCAREER. Additionally, after September 16, 2016 gamers will be able to purchase and download playable “all-time great” teams for each of the playable colleges as well as special collegiate MyTeam cards representing legendary players.

The NBA 2K17 Standard Edition will be available in both digital and physical formats for $59.99 on Xbox One, Xbox 360, PlayStation®4 and PlayStation®3 computer entertainment systems, and Windows PC platforms on September 20. The NBA 2K17 Kobe Bryant Legend Edition will be available in digital and physical formats for $79.99 on Xbox One and PlayStation®4 system. Also available for pre-order is the NBA 2K17 Kobe Bryant Legend Edition Gold offering fans the ultimate value at $99.99 with all of the regular NBA 2K17 Legend Edition contents plus bonus items. All fans who pre-order any version of NBA 2K17 will receive their copy at Early Tip-Off four days early, September 16.

It good to see that the Wingspan a player has affects their skills as opposed to 2k16 where everyone had a maxed out wingspan

Good look... More of a myleague guy myself but I'll just look at as a way to get familiar with the controls before the game comes out... It would be cool if you could pick your personality type and this would determine how your player talks and responds to certain. For example you could chose to have a Derrick Rose personality type in where he's just cool and not overly excited about everything.

I kinda understand why the PC guys got left out of this -- one would think that if they can make the Prelude and Facescan stuff tie into the Xbox One version of the game, they can make it tie into the PC version (since the majority of PC gamers run Windows and the Xbox is made by Microsoft) but I imagine it has something to do with the absolute insane amounts of software/driver/graphic cards combinations a PC rig could have ... it would be difficult to account for all that. I don't blame them too much for taking a pass on it.
This is why they invented APIs - you can delegate the scanning to a phone app which intefaces with the PC backends.

This not being on PC = boooo 2K, booooooooo.

Ideally, I think they should have made thousands of different scenarios (I don't mind if they aren't voiced) for the actual sports events/situation. All the rivalry team lost (you being the superstar of the team or the rookie) means different things, losing a game that affects your team's Playoffs picture, a Duke rookie versus a North Carolina rookie, first career 40, 50, 60 points game... etc

They had a good base system when we only get mini-cutscenes and post game interviews. We just need a massive expansion of that system so everyone will have a unique storyline that's true to themselves. Not bringing in half-wit director to force feed us with a rigid storyline with no wiggle room.

I don't need to be call Frequence Vibrations or President of Basketball... No one picks up the phone and asks for King when they call Lebron James. That's just silly.
2k is also paying these voice actors, and either they spend a lot of money to make sure they cover all names, and all combos, multiple times... or they make us use a nickname.

You guys are being crazy about this, it's not like they only do voice acting for names like James Smith. If not, they would have super weird pauses as it just skipped your name, or they never mentioned your name in the cutscenes which would be equally weird.

stop being so picky about the names geez.

I wonder can we skip the Mycareer story stuff and just go straight to playing.

Of all the things that were said, 'names' was the only one you picked up.

I don't know if they'd liked to because honestly the neglect is just pervasive, from the lack of cheat detection to not even bothering posting patch notes through steam half the time. The latter isn't a big deal in any way shape or form, it's just another signal that they don't care about PC.

Nah. Same voice. I'm just tripping.

I'm usually better at identifying voices.
HA! I suck at it. In 16 tried to pick the different voice - not the one we were used to - and messed up big! LMAO

So many pros, only one con lol:

- "Prez" replaces "Freq". oh god
see, it might, but I'm not sure. Somehow I feel like they might even poke fun at how bad Freq was received. "MyPlayer" isn't like YEAH IT'S PREZ, more like "Prez, wtf?"

I feel more and more stupid for preordering on PC.

So after official release of the game we will be able to play College games on PC?

I don't mind the story. I don't think it's that big of a deal. All I would ask is that let us have options to choose from. I don't want me and everyone else having the same exact story.

I thought last years we'd be able to have options like choosing to stop messing w/ Vic and etc.

The pros of this are, I control every aspect within my ability, I don't have to worry about someone cheesing the CPU to get wins, or constantly playing the cavs/gsw. I get to play in good solid games online every night.

It's funny that you call out MyPark/Pro-Am about catering to kids, yet in those modes, to be successful you have to be a good teammate, or be pretty insane on the sticks, sometimes you need to just be a role player, whereas the 5v5 online, it's catering to someone that constantly needs the ball in their hands.

I actually have a teammate on my pro-am team, that is content with being a true role player, he gets 1-3 shots a game, and plays defense. We told him that's what we needed, not everyone is getting 20 shots a game, and he accepted it and tries his best within that role.

Create a legend is lame in my opinion, why would I want to play as an overpowered legend? It gets boring in MyCareer dropping triple doubles nightly, I want a challenge which is where the Pro-Am and Park come into play.

Due to people having to work together, very few times you play against a team that can cheese you, on 2k16 with 1000 roughly Park games, I've only felt like I've been had a couple times due to **** mechanics, and over 100 Pro-Am games, maybe 5-6 times. I will never find that in 5v5 online.
Gold Star. Awesome post. I'm 31, I love park. I loved Freestyle Online Basketball when I was in my mid 20s, and park is absolutely the same feeling with more controls.

I'll be the first to say Park can be a cheese fest. In reality, any mode that has children playing in any game that's even semi competitive will have that. The difference is that with children, you might lose in reflexes at my age, but out thinking them is very doable. If you have 3 guys that constantly move while moving the ball, it's a wrap on offense. That ball starts whipping around the court so fast that it's like 3 card monty. Doesn't matter where it stops, you lose.

This is why I never complain about attributes and am the guy who harps on balance. I'm fine stuffing different stats each game. The Win matters more than my ppg. If I go 2-3, drop 4 with 5 rebs, 5 ast, and some defensive numbers, that's a fantastic game. It means as much to me as dropping 21 by myself.

I think you should be able to create any player you want.....offline.

Online, balance. Diversity. Individuality and creativity. That's why you need caps for that.

Someone said already it'll be a bunch of balanced players. Cool, as long as I can trump them in the areas I specialize in, that's fine. 6'10 glass cleaner SF? Going to burn you off the dribble. Or out post move you. Or maybe get a glass cleaner PF and out rebound you. If everything has a counter, the game turns into a chess match. That means you actually have to put thought into what you're doing. That makes matches a struggle or difficult, which in turn makes it fun.

Doubtful my dude. I've gotten a cheap PS4 to play the game there because it was really hard to get games on PC last year. I might get it for cheap on PC later on the year.

I can't wait to see Glass Cleaner's, Post Scorers, and Lockdown Defenders on Pro Am. ****, I'm excited to see them on the park too. My hype level is at an all time high.

You know what would be interesting with how each myplayer is more of a specialist than in previous 2ks is having subbing available in proam games. Say you have 2 sfs, 1 is a sharpshooter and you have another that specializes in defense and during timeouts you can sub your sharpshooter sf and bring in your defensive sf maybe due to needing defense at the time or because your shooter needs rest.

This would work like all star teamup I guess. Just a thought, would make proam more realistic and of course mean more use of your multiple myplayers and of course it doesn't have to be the same position, maybe you and a buddy want to change positions or whatever. This all hinges on what improvements they made to proam of course.
