1st year Defensive Coordinator Jimmy Barnett was smiling ear to ear as the clock turned to zeros yesterday as Alaska State managed to hold in check a quick scoring Fresno offense, holding on for a 34-28 victory, securing first place in the West division. Alaska State jumped out to an early 7-0 lead before surrendering 2 quick scores to the Bulldogs. 2 second quarter field goals brought the SnowCats to within 1 point at the half. Then the 'Cats defense turned it up, intercepting Fresno QB Anthony Jacobs twice, one returned for a touchdown by defensive team captain Rashaun Morris, who also led the team with 9 tackles.
RB Shaun Peterson carried the ball and the offense, rushing 27 times for 135yds and 3 TD, and 25yds receiving, earning Peterson his first All-Conference Player of the Week Award. RB Stanford Houston was lost to an undisclosed arm injury in the 3rd quarter, giving true freshman William Davis 9 carries for 31 yards. Davis, the starting strong safety, also had 6 tackles on the day.

This weekends match between 5-3 Alaska State at 6-2 Fresno State figures to be a pivotal game to see who represents the West Division in the conference championship game. Both teams have only one loss in the conference coming into the game, and both are riding the waves of recent success. The Bulldogs are favored at home by 9 points, and Alaska State will need to look to slow down the high powered Bulldog passing attack.

Offensive Captain: Carl Battle, 5-9 174lb RS Junior from Marquette, MI. Carl moved to Anchorage with his aunt and uncle after his senior year in high school. Carl was offered a scholarship after the coaching staff saw him playing flag football at a local church. Coaches were impressed by his body control and hands, and once meeting him, came away more impressed with his maturity. Carl is majoring in Meteorology. Carl posted 38 catches for 535 yds and 2TD. Battle also saw time filling in at returner for the injured Novack. This is the 3rd year Carl has been named offensive captain.

Defensive Captain: Rashaun Morris, 6-3 196lb junior from Mansfield, OH. Morris is one of 5 children, and the first to leave the state of Ohio for college. His 3 brothers and sister all attended the University of Akron. Morris is the first to play football, and he was a stellar PG for his high school team, being named second team all-state twice. Morris brings the smarts and awareness the coaches absolutely love. Morris is like a coach on the field some say, and being named captain was unanimous. Rashaun is a Fish Management major.

The SnowCats were schooled 23-3 by a much more talented Utah team today. ASU only managed 270 yards in the loss, and never really were a threat in this one. Utah amassed 516 yards in the win, with QB Randy Brown going a perfect 20 for 20 for 276yds and 2td on the day, with another 73 on the ground

The #18 Alaska State SnowCats will face off against the Utah Utes in the 2015 Las Vegas Bowl. Utah comes in with an 8-5 record and Alaska State sports a 10-2 record. The players to watch in this game are for Alaska senior Roddy Malone, the Bednarik Award winner, going up against a dynamic Utah offense led by senior Randy Brown and his favorite target Paul Thurman. The SnowCats will have to stop an option offense not too different from what they run.
