NBA 2K17 will feature league expansion for MyGM and MyLEAGUE modes. Check out the details in the new blog from Erick Boenisch, AKA SimBaller.

For anyone who has read my blogs in the past, you know that I am serious about MyGM and MyLEAGUE. I'm blessed to work with a core group of people who share the exact same level of passion. We've done a LOT of work to these modes this year, and one feature I can't stop talking about is...League Expansion. This is entirely new to NBA 2K17, and is the feature I want to tell you about today.
so..confused about the start today thing..so if I am halfway through a season in the game and there is a big roster update can I just pick that and it updates the roster? or do you have to start the season over from there?
It means you start a NEW MyLeague exactly the way the real life NBA is at that point.
So, if you start the season March 2nd, you're standings, stats, transactions, injuries and everything else will match the current NBA season, and you go from there.
That said, while I'd much rather have Kentucky Colonels than Louisville Liberty, "Kansas City Knights" was actually a name I used in 2K16 when moving a team there! I like that name!
Kentucky Colonels was my first choice, but legal squashed that so we went with Louisville Liberty. We also couldn't do Nashville Sound, but liked that name so we put it on St. Louis because of the city's blues history. And for some of the other more generic sounding ones, like Lions, our more creative choices got poo-poo'd by legal.
PS - I'm not going to be able to answer any questions people may have, so please don't ask. Marketing has a plan on when to release information and I can't say anything until it's been announced. I figured this was something safe to comment on...

davez! Good to see you around again man....
I do have one you can answer... still picking from that blue sky list? Has to be bulletin board material right

Legal issues, huh? Alright, I can live with that. Sucks, but better to stay out of court...the kind with lawyers.
Keep up the fantastic work, man. Already got 2K17 pre-ordered on Steam.
The Liberty name belongs in Philadelphia, Storm is a WNBA name, so no, I think NFL when I think Ravens and Lions, they couldn't have used another unused bird like Dodo Peacock or Ostrich or something? Knights I like. Sound belongs in Seattle. Surf sounds like something out of a semi pro league. Stars and Barrons I like. Force, again, something out of a semi pro league.
They could've gotten better more clever names is my point. A name I like is Pterror, which is short for Pterosaur, is an awesome name imo. I think that's what I'll name my team, can't let the Raptors corner the market on dinosaur names.
Pterror sounds weird, it doesn't even sound like a sports team. U don't like those other names but like Pterror? U kidding right? Lol
Some of them are in the menu picture that was posted (Hi-res version)
Baltimore Barons
Cincinnati Lions
Kansas City Knights
Louisville Liberty
Nashville Stars
Pittsburgh Force
San Diego Surf
St. Louis Sound
Vancouver Ravens
Virginia or Virginia Beach Storm (guess part of the logo is covered)
I figured Las Vegas and Seattle would have pre-set teams for sure. Interesting. Was hoping to use default teams for the commentary.
Awesome!! I already have 3 ML's going; 1 current NBA, in 2019 on that one. One is Euroleague, and the last one is a "who's number one" with classic teams along with the modern Warriors and Cavs. I'm gonna need a LOT more save slots this year. Especially if we are somehow able to have more teams rebranded.
So I have a question. If we start a myLeague and want to do expansion after it starts can I add a euroleague team as an expansion team after I start? If so will it keep its current roster rather than doing an expansion draft?
As trivial as it may seem to some, this is the single feature that will keep me playing through the entire cycle. So many possibilities now for us team builders. I hope they add the D-League as well, if so it will make for the best Association/Franchise mode for any sports game ever IMO.
Hopefully this means the created players will be more realistic, since I'm assuming they will fill out the rest of the rosters on expansion teams. And here's also hoping the preset team templates aren't a bunch of wacky color combinations. I'm just really excited to finally have some news.
The rosters won't be filled out by the CPU with generated players, there will be an expansion draft.
