MLB 14 The Show News Post

Operation Sports reader tedus captured a few videos from his MLB 14 The Show hands-on in Taiwan. He also grabbed a couple of screenshots showing off the new front end, which confirms online franchise.

Below are a few of his impressions, after playing for 10 minutes. More info is sure to come soon, but until then, enjoy.
  • The field/batting camera changed!
  • Presentation almost the same!
  • Control felt good!
  • Base running animation felt some different!
  • Fielding felt more responsive

Features are the same across the board on both platforms. Pretty sure the PS4 will be a big upgrade and not just in the graphic department. Only thing identical is the features on both systems. Example Franchise Mode, online franchise etc......

It's such a subtle addition, but absolutely beautiful and immersive. Not exaggerating, it's the one thing I wanted to see in The Show that I thought 2K did better -- and SCEA has delivered.

obviously being a first iteration of the new console, theres no way it will use 100% of the power on PS4. it takes time for the developers, even first and second party developers, to know how to take advantage of the technology. my guess is there will be major graphics upgrade in this years version and they'll continue to refine the physics and engine in the future iterations. this is pretty much the case in most of the next gen sports games so far.

So does that mean that since MLB14/PS3 is not just a new paint job of MLB13, that essentially MLB14/PS4 will just be a better paint job of MLB14/PS3?

In my opinion, you can make the inside of the stadiums as beautiful as you want, but if the backdrops are eyesores...

I think this is where the PS3 memory limitation conversations come into play.

Don't know if you were referencing me or not, but my update talk was only in reference to Franchise mode. I haven't seen any info on updates to that mode which is why I said "hopefully there is news on that" coming in the future. I don't recall any major updates if any to the mode at all in '13.

Online Franchise so far this year though

We havent seen any info on updates in any mode.

Nothing has been said officially. Everything so far is based off of about 2 min worth of gameplay captured by the users iPhone.

Does that means that the development of the ps4 version is going to be a lot better than what is expected for the first game on a new system???? or just plain and simple "common sense" that it takes a few years to be able to harness all the potential of a new system?

# 232 MrOldboy @ 01/27/14 04:22 PM
I haven't had a chance to watch the whole video since I'm at work, but what I saw of the presentation looks like a nice update from last year. The menu reminds me a lot of how other sports games have gone with the whole tiled menu system. I hope its smooth to navigate. Glas some footage and info has finally come out, hopefully more starts coming in.

It means while the ps4 will be impressive and there will be a lot of cool things that weren't possible on the ps3, there is no way it will be maxed out (or using the full potential) this year. Just like how when they went to the ps3 it got better and better each year, we will see the same with the ps4. We should still be very excited for the ps4 version this year and I'm sure it'll blow us away, but there's no way they used all of it's abilities in the very first development cycle.

I completely understand what you are saying, I just remember reading that mlb 07 on the ps3 wasn't that great or a huge step from the ps2 version and didn't fair all too well in reviews. However I recall hearing that the ps3 was very hard to develop games on in the beginning and that the ps4 is actually easier to develop games on, so therefore thinking that SCEA might have a easier time creating MLB 14 on the ps4 than what they did on MLB 07 for the ps3, initially being able to harness more power out of the ps4 than what they could on the ps3 the first time around. More than likely I'm reading to far into what Russell said, but I'm not game developer nor work in the industry so I'm totally speculating.

07 on PS3 was sort of dissapointing and in 08 the game was a huge improvement. The issues with the hardware could have been an issue, but it could have also been as simple as a lack of resources (money) and time. I think people need to put things in perspective though. They had years to tune the game on PS3 and its at an incredible place right now. If they can simply replicate the experience on PS4 with a new shiny paint job that would satisfy a lot of people, including me. We need to look at comparables like NBA 2K14 an FIFA 14. As people have said the features should be the same between systems, they weren't even in NBA 2K14. I'd assume there are some added benefits on PS4, but I am not expecting as huge of a leap as maybe some others are. If the game plays as well as it has on PS3 and runs at a smooth 1080/60fps that will be more than enough for me for the first game on a new console.

Looks good I'm really excited for Online Franchise. I've always wanted a baseball game to have this feature. Definitely became a day one buy for me.

A few things I hope make it into the PS4 version. I've never had any issues with gameplay I've always been an equipment guy and true to real life feel of the players and ballpark.

Tor,AZ,Mia,Sea,Hou,Mil all get at least the options of opened and closed roof(I could care less if it opened during game, just want the option to choose before the game starts or if bad weather is the forecast it'll automatically do it is fine by me).

The player editor:I'm hoping they open up the customization. Example(NONE OF IT NEEDS TO BE NAME BRAND everyone already knows why) More batting gloves, Mitts(Trapeze,Web,Hinge Etc) More variations in the glasses, jewelry, shin guards, variation in pine tar on the bat(only has 1 type now). Get rid the player wearing the MLB The Show Jersey and put him in his real team uni the player editing would be easier and faster. Home/Road equipment(This applies to things like batting gloves, catcher's gear etc...) More variation in catchers gear such as allowing us to edit the colors of the masks and helmets(hockey style) and different mask types(Think Jorge Posada a while back).

Hey I get your perspective. I'm a franchise guy and I play ever game without simming (all 162 games and playoffs if I get that far) The game has always played well for me and I've had no complaints with game play ever. I'm not worried about bugs on the new system(every game on the planet always has bugs) SCEA always does a great job in finding problems and fixing them in most cases. I honestly doubt you'll have to worry about bad game play issues on the PS4. These guys are good at what they do.

2k had it in their editor(including Minor League unis when editing those players). Madden has it as does NBA 2k14(always had it prior as well)
